Founded on the 4th of July 1776, the independent United States of America was born. Free from the rule of the British after winning the American Revolutionary War, it became a federal presidential constitutional republic and the office of the president was established in 1789. Since then, 44 men have served as president, the first being George Washington. Grover Cleveland served two non-consecutive terms as the nation’s 22nd and 24th president, and incumbent 45th president, Donald Trump, took office on 20 January 2017.
U.S. Presidents are elected to a four-year term (serving a maximum of two terms) and their function is to lead the federal government, enforce the laws of the land, and act as commander-in-chief of the armed forces. Since Andrew Jackson, March 1829 - 1837, there have been 15 Democratic and 19 Republican presidents.
