- Different coins have different colors, sizes, shapes, material, writings and pictures on them. Similarly all dollar bills do not look alike.
- Every dollar bill has a different value and a different outlook.
Important coins
- Penny = 1 cent
- It is the smallest coin in bronze brown shade. It has Lincoln’s image on one side.
- Nickel = 5 cents

- It is silver in color and has a picture of Thomas Jefferson on one side.

- Dime = 10 cents
- It is silver in color and has picture of Franklin D. Roosevelt on one side.
- Quarter = 25 cents
- It is larger than penny, dime and nickel. It is silver in color and has the picture of George Washington on one side.
- Half dollar = 50 cents
- This coin is silver in color and is larger than a penny , nickel , dime and quarter. It has the picture of John F. Kennedy on one side.

Example:
- How many total number of cents do the following coins represent:
- The first coin is a penny and the remaining three coins are dimes.
1 penny = 1 cent
1 dime = 10 cents
- To find the total number of cents we will add all.
total cents = 1 + 10 + 10 + 10
total cents = 31 cents
Example:
- How many total number of cents do the following coins represent:
- In the above image the first two coin are nickels, the third coin is a quarter and the last two coins are pennys.
1 nickel = 5 cents
1 quarter = 25 cents
1 penny = 1 cent
- To find the total cents we will add the value of all of the coins above:
total cents = 5 + 5 + 25 + 1 + 1
total cents = 37 cents
Example:
- Tommy wants to donate 10 dollars to charity. The charity organization is only accepting donations in quarter coins. How many coins will Tommy give so that 10 dollar are donated to charity?
1 quarter = 25 cents
1 dollar = 100 cents
1 quarter is equal to 25 cents.
There are 100 cents in a dollar so 1 dollar will be equal to four quarters. So in order to given 10 dollars, Tommy has to give 40 quarter for donation.
Example:
- Sarah wants to buy a new school bag with her pocket money. The pink school bag in the shop costs 10 dollars. She has half dollar coins with her. How many coins does she need to buy the school bag?
The cost of school bag is 10 dollars.
cost of school bag = 10 dollars
We know that one half dollar coin is equal to 50 cents.
half dollar = 50 cents
50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 + 50 cents to buy the pink bag.
This means she needs to pay 20 half dollar coins.
