Learning about even and odd numbers helps us understand the number system and is a very important skill. In one basic grouping system we divide the numbers into two parts: even and odd. Even numbers are numbers that can be split in two equal groups. Whereas odd numbers are numbers that cannot be split in two equal groups.
See the fact file below for more information on the even and odd numbers or alternatively, you can download our 28-page Odd and Even Numbers worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment. This worksheet is broken down by Beginner, intermediate and advanced meaning you can choose the complexity level for your student.
Key Facts & Information
Summary:
- Even numbers: the numbers that can be divided into two equal parts.
- Odd numbers: the numbers that cannot be divided into two equal parts.
- Important concept to learn and understand the number system.
What are even and odd numbers?
- Till now we have studied numbers in general. These numbers can be divided further into many groups. In one basic grouping system we divide the numbers into two parts: even and odd.
- Even numbers are numbers that can be split in two equal groups.
- Whereas odd numbers are numbers that cannot be split in two equal groups.
- Learning about even and odd numbers helps us understand the number system and is a very important skill. Children are able to learn advance operations more effectively when they know about even and odd numbers.
- Even numbers:
2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, ….
- Odd numbers:
1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, ….
How do we distinguish between even and odd numbers?
- Suppose we have 6 red apples as shown in the image below:
- If we try to divide them in two equal parts then we can have two groups of 3 apples each as shown below:
- Since both the groups have equal numbers of red apples so we can say that we have even numbers of red apples.
- Now suppose we have 5 ripe oranges as shown below:
- When we try to divide these oranges into two parts, one part will always have more number of oranges than the other. Hence we cannot divide these oranges in two equal parts so we have odd number of oranges.
Example #1:
- In the group of four numbers given below find the ones that are even:
2, 7, 4, 3
- We use balls to visually understand if the numbers are even or not and then divide them in two groups:
- 2 can be divided into two equal parts hence it is even.
- 7 cannot be divided into two equal parts. One part will always have more balls than the other, hence it is odd.
- 4 can be divided into two equal parts hence it is even.
- 3 cannot be divided into two equal parts. One part will always have more number of balls as compared to the other part , hence it is odd.
Example #2:
- Look at the flower pot and tell which if it has odd number of flowers or even number of flowers.
- When we observe the pot, we see that it has four flowers. The four flowers can be divided into two equal groups. Each group will have two flowers. So we can say that the flower pot has even number of flowers.
Example #3:
- Emma has 8 dolls. She wants to give half of her dolls to her friend Anna. Does she have even number of dolls?
- We know that Emma wants to divide her dolls into two equal parts so that she can share them with her friend Anna. When we try to divide the dolls into two equal groups, we get four dolls in each group. Now both the groups have 4 dolls. Therefore Emma has even number of dolls.
- Once we are able to understand the logic between differentiating even and odd numbers, we can even identify larger numbers. This is a very important skill and will help students understand different groups of numbers.
- Student will learn division, square and prime numbers more easily when they have the concept of even and odd numbers. Later when student have learnt multiplication they can identify a number as an even number if it is divisible by two. If it is not divisible by two then it is an odd number.
Importance of learning even and odd numbers
- Children will develop a better understanding of the number system.
- The pairing of objects or numbers is a very basic concept that will be used again and again in mathematics and also in real world problems.
- Learning about odd and even numbers will help with division, squares etc.
