What is a coin ?
- A coin is a circular piece of metal. Coins are used worldwide as a form of money. Coins have different sizes and shapes. Coins have writings and pictures on them. There are many different coins and each type has its own worth. So we can say each type of coin has a special value.
Why is it importance to identify coins ?
- It is very important for children to identify coins. They should try to memorize the basic differences between coins such as shape, color, writings etc. These differences will help them identify different types of coins.
- Understanding the value of money is very important for children because we deal with money all the time. Knowing how to deal with money is a very necessary life skill.
Basic conversion to remember:
- One dollar = 100 cents
Types coin and their values:
- Penny:
- Penny is a circular small coin that is light in weight. Its color is bronze brown. Its value is equal to one cent. It has Lincoln’s image on one side and an image of Lincoln memorial on the other side. Its picture is shown below:
- Nickel:
- A nickel has a little more weight and is a little larger in size as compared to a penny. It is round in shape and is silver in color. Its value is 5 cents. It has a picture of Thomas Jefferson on one side and a picture of monticello on the other. Its picture is shown below:
- Dime:
- A dime is smaller than a penny and a nickel. It is round in shape and silver in color. It is lighter in weight than a penny and nickel. Its value is 10 cents. It has a picture of Franklin D. Roosevelt on one side and a picture of torch on the other side. Its picture is shown below:
- Quarter:
- A quarter is round in shape and silver in color. Its value is 25 cents. It is larger than a nickel. It has more weight than a nickel. It has a picture of George Washington on one side. The picture on the other side has been changing over and over. These days it either has a picture of United states Emblem or a pattern depicting one of the fifty american states. Its picture is shown below:
- Half dollar:
- This coin is silver in color and round in shape. It is larger in size and has more weight than a penny , nickel , dime and quarter. Its value is 50 cents. It has the picture of John F. Kennedy on one side and a picture of the presidential coat of Arms on the other side. Its picture is shown below:
Example:
A packet of candies is worth 20 cents. If Eric has dimes in his pocket, how many dimes does he have to give to the shopkeeper to buy the packet of candies?
cost of packet = 20 cents
1 dime = 10 cents
He needs 10 + 10 dimes to pay for the candies. So he has to give two dimes to the shopkeeper.
Example:
Jennifer needs to buy a box fruits for her class party. The box cost 50 cents. She only has nickels in her pocket. How many nickels does she need to buy the box of fruits?
cost of box of fruits= 50 cents
1 nickel = 5 cents
10 nickels = 50 cents
So Jennifer needs 10 nickels to buy the box of fruits.

Answer the following questions:
How many quarters make a dollar?
1 quarter is equal to 25 cents. We need 4 quarters to make 1 dollar. 1 dollar is equal to 100 cents.
How many cents do we need to make a dollar?
We need 100 cents to make a dollar
