Addition sentences are basically mathematical expressions. These expressions show two or more numbers that are being added together and also show their combined value. These help us solve addition problems and we can find missing terms with the help of addition sentences.
See the fact file below for more information on the addition sentences or alternatively, you can download our 28-page Addition Sentences worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment. This worksheet is broken down by Beginner, intermediate and advanced meaning you can choose the complexity level for your student.
Key Facts & Information
Summary:
- Addition sentences are mathematical expressions in the form:
1 + 2 + 3 = 6 - These help us solve addition problems.
- We can find missing terms with the help of addition sentences.
What is addition?
- There are four basic operations that we learn in mathematics. Addition is one them. When we add numbers we find total value or sum of the numbers.
- The symbol for addition is “+”.
- Addition is a very fundamental operation and is used quite often in mathematics and in everyday life. We start by learning single digit addition which is the most basic form of addition. After single digit addition we move to double digit addition. Then we learn repeated addition which forms a strong base for multiplication.
Addition sentences
- Addition sentences are basically mathematical expressions. These expressions show two or more numbers that are being added together and also show their combined value.
- The expression includes the “+” sign and the “=” sign. To elaborate further will shows examples of some expressions:
1 + 1 = 2
2 + 4 = 6
1 + 2 + 6 = 9
8 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 15
- Every number in the addition sentence is called a term. Now in the first two examples we have three terms. In the third example we have four terms. In the fourth example we have six terms.
Solving addition sentences
- We can be asked to solve an addition sentence with a missing term. The missing term can be at any place.
- Here are a few examples of addition sentences with missing terms:
1 + 2= _____
3 + 2= _____
7 + 1 + 1 = ______
- Here the missing terms are on the right hand side on their own where no other term is present. So by simply adding the left hand side of each equation we will get the missing term. Solving this is easy as it requires basic addition skills.
- After solving we will have the following answers:
1 + 2 = 3
3 + 2 = 5
7 + 1 + 1 = 9
- When the missing term is in between or next to the other terms that are being added then we can not simply find the missing term by adding the other terms. In this case we need to use subtraction.
- This concept will be elaborated here with a very simple example:
1 + 1 + _____ = 5
- Here to find the missing term we have to subtract all the given terms on the left hand side from the sum on the right hand side so:
_____ = 5 – 1 – 1
missing term = 3
- Here are missing term will be equal to 3.
Example:
- Find the missing terms:
1 + 2 = ?
3 + 7 = ?
5 + 5 + 1 = ?
3 + 2 + 4 + 1= ?
6 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 1=?
- The first sentence has three terms. The missing term is the sum of terms on the left hand side.
1 + 2 = 3
3 is the missing term.
- The second sentence also has three terms. The missing term is the sum of terms on the left hand side.
3 + 7 = 10
10 is the missing term.
- The third sentence has four terms. The missing term is the sum of terms on the left hand side.
5 + 5 + 1 = 11
11 is the missing term.
- The fourth sentence has five terms. The missing term is the sum of terms on the left hand side.
3 + 2 + 4 + 1 = 10
10 is the missing term.
- The fifth sentence has six terms. The missing term is the sum of terms on the left hand side.
6 + 1 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 11
11 is the missing term.
Example:
- Find the missing terms:
10 + 11 = ?
24 + 16 = ?
13 + 41 = ?
12 + 2 + 16 = ?
- The first sentence has three terms. The missing term is the sum of terms on the left hand side.
10 + 1 1= 21
21 is the missing term.
- The second sentence also has three terms. The missing term is the sum of terms on the left hand side.
24 + 16 = 40
40 is the missing term.
- The third sentence also has three terms. The missing term is the sum of terms on the left hand side.
13 + 41 = 54
54 is the missing term.
- The fourth sentence has four terms. The missing term is the sum of terms on the left hand side.
12 + 2 + 16 = 30
30 is the missing term.
Example:
- Find the missing terms:
1 + ____ = 3
____ + 5 = 7
- In the first sentence the second term on the left hand side is missing. To find this term we subtract all the other terms on the left side from the sum on the right hand side.
missing term =3 – 1
missing term = 2
- In the second sentence the first term on the left hand side is missing. To find this term we subtract all the other terms on the left side from the sum on the right hand side.
missing term =7 – 5
missing term = 2
