Japan is an island nation in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south.

Japan has a high standard of living, and has the highest life expectancy in the world.
History Of Japan:
- Decorated clay vessels from around 14,000 BC in Japan are some of the earliest known pieces of pottery found in the world.
- Around 300 BC, the Yayoi people began to enter the Japanese islands, who introduced wet-rice farming and metallurgy.
- Japan’s feudal era was influenced heavily by the samurai, who were a ruling class of warriors.
- Buddhism became popular among the samurai class between 1185 and 1333.
- During the 16th century, Portuguese Jesuit missionaries came to Japan and exchanged commercially and culturally with the Japanese.
- In 1854, the Convention of Kanagawa opened Japan to the outside world; this was a treaty between the United States and present-day Japan in order to end Japan’s 220-year-old policy of seclusion.
- The treaty opened ports to American vessels, and established diplomatic relations with Western powers.
- Japan sided with the Allies in World War I, which widened their influence and territorial holdings in Asia.
- On December 7th and 8th, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbour, and declared war on the United States. Japan surrendered on August 15th, 1945.
- Japan was granted membership into the United Nations in 1956, and has been on the path towards economic recovery since 2000.
Geography Of Japan:
- Japan has nearly 7,000 islands along the Pacific coast of East Asia.
- About 73% of Japan is forested, mountainous, and unusable for agriculture, industry, or residential use.
- Japan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world.
- The islands of Japan are located in a volcanic zone on the Pacific Ring of Fire and has 108 active volcanoes.
- Japan often suffers from earthquakes, tsunamis, and eruptions.
- The climate in Japan is mostly temperate, but varies from north to south, with 6 climatic zones.
- The main rainy season begins in May and lasts about 6 weeks.
- Japan has nine forest ecoregions.
- Japan has over 90,000 species of wildlife, including the brown bear, the giant salamander, the raccoon dog, and the Japanese macaque, pictured left, who like to bathe in hot springs.

- Japan has an Emperor, which is a figurehead position.
- The Prime Minister and his cabinet have executive powers, and sovereignty is vested in the Japanese people.
- The legislative body in Japan is called the National Diet.
Culture & Economy Of Japan:
- Japan has diplomatic relations with almost all independent nations.
- They are very close with the United States and is the fifth largest donor of official development assistance.
- Japan is the third largest economy in the world, behind the United States and China.
- Japan exports some of the most technologically advanced motor vehicles, machine tools, ships, and textiles.
- Japan’s unemployment rate is around 4%.
- The main exports from Japan are machinery, fossil fuels, chemicals, and textiles. They have a small tax revenue.
- Japan attracted 24 million international tourists in 2016.
- More than 99% of Japanese people speak Japan as their first language.
- Japanese architecture is characterized by wooden structures, elevation off the ground, and sliding doors.
- Although retaining much of its traditional culture, Japan has incorporated much of Western architecture into their designs.
- Japan is a world-renowned powerhouse of animation, including the incorporation of anime, manga, and other animated cartoons.
- The music in Japan is very diverse and interesting.
- Japanese cuisine is built on the practice of combining staple foods such as rice, noodles, and soup, as well as fish, vegetables, and tofu. Sweets are referred to as “wagashi”, and some favorites include green tea ice cream, shaved ice with syrup, and sake.
- There are many festivals in Japan celebrated at many times.
- Sumo is Japan’s national sport, but martial arts, karate, and baseball are also very popular; the latter being the most popular.
