It tells the story of a vampire named Count Dracula who tries to move from Transylvania to England in pursuit of new blood. Professor Abraham Van Helsing and his group battle with Count Dracula to prevent him from spreading the curse.

Background
- Dracula was first published in May 1897 in London.
- Bram Stoker dreamt of “a vampire king rising from the tomb” and started writing the novel based on that, according to biographer Harry Ludlam.
- The first working title of the novel was The Dead Un-dead.
- Dracula means “Son of the Dragon”. Dracul in Romanian means Dragon. Dracula’s alleged real-life counterpart, Wallachian Prince Vlad II or Vlad the Impaler, changed his name to Dracul as he was a member of a secret society: Order of the Dragon.
- Vlad II is known for having killed up to 100,000 people, and his favorite torture method was impalement, thus he’s also known as Vlad the Impaler.
- Stoker wrote Dracula two years after the Jack the Ripper incident in London.
- Actor Henry Irving was said to be the inspiration for Dracula’s chivalrous behavior.
Book Summary
- The novel begins with English solicitor Jonathan Harker visiting Dracula’s home in Transylvania to give legal real estate advice. At first, Harker is charmed by Dracula but later realizes that Dracula is a vampire.
- Harker gets trapped in Dracula’s home with his vampire sisters.
- Dracula leaves Transylvania and heads to England.
- On a Russian ship to England, Dracula feeds on the ship’s crew and leaves as a dog.
- In England, Dracula stalks Lucy Westenra, the friend of Mina Murray (Harker’s fiancée). He infects Lucy with vampirism when he feeds on her blood every night.
- Lucy falls ill and her suitors John Seward, Arthur Holmwood, and Quincey Morris approach Professor Abraham Van Helsing for help.
- Professor Van Helsing finds out the cause of Lucy’s deterioration, but does not tell anyone. He advises garlic for protection instead.
- Garlic does not keep Dracula from transforming Lucy into an undead vampire and killing her mother.
- Harker escapes Transylvania and goes back to England a traumatized person.
- Upon his arrival in England, Harker provides Van Helsing, Mina, and Lucy’s suitors clues about Dracula.
- They initially track down Dracula and plan to save Lucy.
- The group finds Lucy but ends up killing her.
- They also find out that Dracula has bought several real estate properties all over London under the name Count de Ville.
- Dracula learns about the group’s intentions then infects Mina with vampirism.
- Mina does not completely turn into a vampire. Through hypnotizing Mina, Van Helsing and the group track down Dracula.
- In the end, the group was able to drive a stake through Dracula’s heart, turning him to dust.

- Count Dracula is a shapeshifting vampire from Transylvania who relocated to London.
- Jonathan Harker is an English solicitor who gets imprisoned in Dracula’s Transylvanian lair but eventually escapes.
- Mina Harker is Jonathan’s fiancée who is later infected by Dracula’s vampirism but not transformed into an undead. She helps in tracking down Dracula.
- Lucy Westenra is Mina’s friend who is Dracula’s first victim.
- Professor Abraham Van Helsing is the Dutch doctor that helps in diagnosing victims of Dracula, tracking down Dracula, battling him, and defeating him.
- John Seward, Arthur Holmwood, and Quincey Morris are Lucy’s suitors who make up Professor Van Helsing’s group of Dracula hunters.

- Two years following Bram Stoker’s death, his short story “Dracula’s Guest” was published.
- In 2009, Stoker’s great-grand-nephew Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt co-wrote a sequel entitled Dracula the Un-dead.
- A prequel entitled Dracul was written by Dacre Stoker and J.D. Barker, going off of Bram Stoker’s journals, notes, and the original script.
