Early Life
- Eldrick Tont Woods was born on December 30, 1975. Earl, his father, was a former US Army officer and Vietnam War veteran. Earl met his mother, Kultida, in Thailand while on duty there in 1968.
- Earl’s father gave him the nickname Tiger in honor of Earl’s friend, South Vietnamese Colonel Vuong Dang “Tiger” Phong.
- He was raised in Orange County, California, as a prodigy who was introduced to golf before turning two years old.
Amateur Golf Career
- In 1978, he was invited to The Mike Douglas Show and attempted to hit a golf ball into a hole.
- He had the privilege to play at the Navy golf course, where he had a record of shooting 48 over nine holes at the age of three because Earl was a member of the military.
- He made an appearance in Golf Digest when he was five years old.
- He won the Drive, Pitch, and Putt competition at the Navy Golf Course before he was seven years old.
- He achieved success in the Junior World Golf Championships six times with the first being in 1984.
- He first defeated his father at the age of 11, and Earl kept losing to him since that time.
- In 1989, he started entering the major national junior tournament by playing in the Big I.
- He first met Jack Nicklaus at Los Angeles‘ Bel-Air Country Club. He was a part of the club’s members’ show, and Nicklaus was impressed by his performance. Earl researched Nicklaus’ career accomplishments and challenged him to break them.
- He enrolled at Anaheim’s Western High School, where he became the youngest U.S. Junior Amateur champion.
- He was named Southern California Amateur Player of the Year in 1991, as well as Golf Digest Junior Amateur Player of the Year.
- As his first Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour event, he competed in the Nissan Los Angeles Open, where he won multiple awards.
- He graduated from Western High School in 1994 as the “Most Likely to Succeed” student.
- Despite his many golf accomplishments, he often felt different and did not fit in with other teenagers.
College Golf Career
- Many colleges invited him, but he chose Stanford University. With a golf scholarship, he enrolled in the fall of 1994 with a major in economics. In September, he won his first collegiate event, the 40th Annual William H. Tucker Invitational. His college teammate, Notah Begay III, referred to him as “Urkel.”
- In 1995, he defended his title in the US Amateur at Newport Country Club, where he was awarded the Pac-10 Player of the Year, NCAA First Team All-American, and Stanford’s Male Freshman of the Year.
- At 19, he participated in the 1995 Masters as his first PGA Tour major. He was the only amateur to be included in the top 41. In 1997, he won the same tournament with 12 strokes.
- He won the silver medal as a leading amateur at The Open Championship.
- He was unable to complete college because he chose to pursue a career in golf.
Professional Golf Career
- In August 1996, he turned professional in the golf industry at the age of 20. He signed advertising deals with Nike, Inc. He also accepted offers from the most lucrative endorsement at the time, a contract with Titleist.
- Sports Illustrated, an American sports magazine, named him Sportsman of the Year in 1996 and PGA Tour Rookie of the Year in 1997.
- He won his first major in the 1997 Masters as the youngest winner of the tournament.
- He had laser eye surgery in 1999 because he was severely myopic or nearsighted. He didn’t let it affect his career and quickly returned to winning tour events.
- He won six consecutive PGA Tour events in 2000. He achieved the Career Grand Slam at the youngest age in golf history. Despite this, he won many events from the tournament, winning nine of the twenty PGA Tour events. He was the only athlete to receive Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year for a second time. In addition, Golf Digest ranked him as the twelfth-best golfer of all time.
- In 2001 and 2002, his career flourished even more. He won four consecutive major professional golf titles, which became known as the “Tiger Slam.” However, he was unable to win a major in the following years.
- He regained prominence in the golf industry after winning six PGA Tour events in 2005.
- He won the first two PGA tournaments in 2006 but failed to win his fifth major at the Masters. His father died in May, so he took a break from his career. However, when he returned to the game, he was not as good as before. He regained his playing status the same year, winning six consecutive tour events. He finished the season with 54 victories, 12 of which were majors.
- In 2007, he won two World Golf Championships, the FedEx Cup, and two Majors. It was considered the peak of his career where his handicap was recorded at +9.4.
- In golf, handicaps represent ability based on scores and serve as a basis for comparison with other golfers. Men typically have 0-28, and women have 0-36.
- He had knee surgery in April 2008, which forced him to miss the next two months of the tour. He returned to play in the 2008 US Open, defeating Rocco Mediate. Two days after his victory, he announced that he would be forced to withdraw from the season due to further damage to his knee, which would necessitate additional surgery.
- He came back with an excellent performance at the 2009 Presidents Cup, but he was not able to win a major. He announced a break from competition in December without specifying when or if he would return. He lost several endorsement deals causing him to regret his decision.
- He had a difficult time regaining his prominence. In 2014, he suffered several injuries, including one to his back. He had it for years and had back surgery on September 16, 2015. His back problems remained an issue in 2017.
- In 2018, he returned to the field. He achieved high rankings but did not win the championship.
- In 2021, he was caught in a motor vehicle accident. He joined the 2022 Masters Tournament, where he finished in 47th place.
- In August 2022, Rory McIlroy, a professional golfer from Northern Ireland, announced that he and Woods would start another golf league they called the TGL or tech-fused golf league. It will run in 2024 in partnership with the PGA Tour.
