Estimation of numbers means to find the closest value to the actual value. Estimation is an important concept taught in mathematics. We cannot always find exact solutions to our problems due to many reasons. In such cases where it is not possible to find the exact value sometimes we have to make the closest guess or find the closest value.
See the fact file below for more information on the estimation or alternatively, you can download our 28-page Estimation worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment. This worksheet is broken down by Beginner, intermediate and advanced meaning you can choose the complexity level for your student.
Key Facts & Information
Summary:
- Estimation of numbers means to find the closest value to the actual value.
- This helps to estimate solutions of complicated problems which require tough calculations.
- Estimation also helps in daily tasks when we have to estimate time, money or any other quantity.
What is estimation?
- Estimation is an important concept taught in mathematics.
- We cannot always find exact solutions to our problems due to many reasons. In such cases where it is not possible to find the exact value sometimes we have to make the closest guess or find the closest value.
- So estimation means to find the nearest possible value to the correct answer.
- Estimation is very important in everyday life. We often need to estimate things. Sometimes we need to estimate the time needed to complete something so that we do not get late.
- We also need to estimate the cost of things so that we have an idea about how we will manage our budget. We also need to estimate the quantity of items or people at times.
- So in short estimation is an essential part of our lives we need it every now and then .
Symbol for estimation
- When we have the exact solution to something we use “equals” symbol but when we make an estimation and determine an approximate answer in that case we use “approximately equals” symbol.
- Both the symbols are shown in the diagram below:
- The first symbol is used when we know the exact value of something.
- The second symbol is used when we know the approximate value of something.
- We will explain this concept further with the help of examples.
Importance of estimation
- Estimation is an important skill that children need to develop.
- If children are well aware of the concept of estimation they can tell that the answer they have calculated is in the correct range.
- It helps improve their mental math skills and helps them in daily routine tasks.
Example:
- First estimate then count the number of stars in the diagram below:
- In the given diagram first we estimate the number of yellow stars by looking at them and then we count them.
- Lets suppose that our estimation at a glance is that there are 25 stars present. Now we count to check the total number of stars.
- When we count we find out that the exact number of starts is 23 which is close to our estimated value.
Example:
- First estimate then count the number of hearts in the diagram below:
- In the given diagram first we estimate the number of pink hearts by looking at them and then we count them.
- Lets suppose that our estimation at a glance is that there are 10 hearts present. Now we count to check the total number of hearts.
- When we count we find out that the exact number of hearts is 12 which is close to our estimated value.
Example:
- Estimate the sum of the following numbers:
23 and 41
- First we round these numbers to 20 and 40 and then calculate their sum mentally. So their estimated sum is 60 which is close to the actual sum, 64.
Example:
- Estimate the sum of the following numbers:
404 and 206
- First we round these numbers to 200 and 400. We can easily calculate the sum of these numbers mentally using mental math skills. The estimated sum of these numbers is 600 which is close to the actual sum, 610.
Example:
- Estimate the sum of the following numbers:
5012 and 3003
- First we round these numbers to 5000 and 3000. We can easily calculate the sum of these numbers mentally using mental math skills. The estimated sum of these numbers is 8000 which is close to the actual sum, 8015.
Example:
- Elizabeth has 12 mini pizzas. She wants to distribute pizza slices among her friends. If each pizza is cut into 4 slices, estimate the total number of slices.
We observe that if we have 10 pizzas and each is cut into 4 slices then the total number of slices will be 40 so we can estimate that there are approximately 40 slices of pizzas.
Example:
- Sarah cleans one room in 6 mins. If she has to clean 5 rooms of her house, how many minute does she needs?
We observe that if 1 room takes approximately 5 minutes then 5 rooms will takes 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5, 25 minutes.
So we can estimate that Sarah needs approximately 25 minutes to clean 5 rooms.
