Key Facts & Information
Summary:
- Word problems are questions in the form of sentences that can be solved using mathematics.
- Example:
Tom has two pencils and Kyle has four pencils find the total pencils:
Total pencils = 2 + 4
Total pencils = 6 - Important for developing critical and analytical skills of students.
- Used at all levels from primary to advance.
What is a word problem?
- A Word problem is a problem or a question written in the form of a few sentences or a small paragraph.
- The data or numbers needed to solve this problem are given in these sentences.
- After taking this data from the problem we solve it by using mathematical operations and calculations.
- Word problems are taught at all stages and help students think logically and develop important learning skills.
- Therefore they are a vital part of Mathematics.
- Word problems can be related to any topic such as addition, subtraction, comparison, multiplication etc.
- In this article we will elaborate the concept of word problems for beginners by giving examples that involve counting, addition and comparison.
Why are word problems important?
- They enhance mental skill of the students.
- They helps students with learning mathematical vocabulary.
- Children learn how to interpret statements.
- Children develop critical and analytical thinking skills.
- Children are able to solve real time problems with ease.
Example #1:
- There are two blue cats and two orange cats playing in the garden. How many cats are in the garden altogether?
From the statement we know that there are two blue cats.
Blue cats = 2
From the statement we know that there are two orange cats.
Orange cats = 2
Blue cats + Orange cats = Total cats
2 + 2 = Total cats
Total cats = 4
Hence the total number of cats will be 4.
Example #2:
- Emma loves to eat fruits. Emma ate one apple, two oranges and four strawberries. How many fruits did she eat?
From the statement we know Emma ate one apple.
Apples = 1
From the statement we know Emma ate two oranges.
Oranges = 2
From the statement we know Emma ate four strawberries.
Strawberries = 4
Apples +Oranges+strawberries = Total Fruits
1 + 2 + 4 = Total Fruits
Total Fruits = 7
Hence we can say Emma ate 7 fruits altogether.
Example #3:
- Sam scored nine marks in a quiz, Robin scored six and John scored ten. Who scored the highest marks in the quiz?
- Here we know:
Sam’s marks = 9
Robin’s marks = 6
John’s marks = 10
- When we compare these we get the following result:
John’s marks > Sam’s marks
John’s marks > Robin’s marks
Hence John scored the highest in the quiz.
Example #4:
- There are two boys and four girls in a classroom. How many students are present in the classroom?
- From the given word problem we know:
Boys = 2
Girls = 4
- Total students will be given as following:
Boys + Girls = Total students
2 + 4 = Total students
Total students = 6
Hence we can say that 6 students are present in the classroom.
Example #5:
- 112 men and 108 women took part in a marathon in Athens. Were there more men or more women in the marathon race?
- The total number of men that took part in the race are given as follows:
Total Men = 112
- Total number of women that took part in the race are given as follows:
Total Women = 108
- By comparing both these values we can find if there were more men or more women.
- By comparing we get the following result:
Total Men > Total Women
So more men participated in the Marathon race as compared to women.
Example #6:
- There are total 8 apples in the kitchen. 5 of them are red. How many apples are green?
Red apples = 5
Total apples = 8
Green apples = ?
- We use counting to solve this problem.
As there are five red apples, the remaining three apples are green.
Green apples = 3
Example #7:
- Jennifer has two pink balls and Tommy has seven pink balls. Find total balls:
Jennifer’s balls + Tommy’s balls = Total balls
2 + 7 = Total balls
Total balls = 9
The total number of balls are 9.
Example #8:
- Nick scored ten marks in Mathematics, six marks in English and eight marks in Science. What were the total marks on his result card?
- To find the total marks on his result card we add the marks of all three subjects:
Maths marks + English marks + Science marks = Total marks
10 + 6 + 8 = Total marks
Total marks = 24
So the total score on his result card is 24.
