Dolly Rebecca Parton is an American singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, actress, author businesswoman, and humanitarian. She is greatly known for her contributions in country music. Her career in the 1960’s experienced steady success as she released solo albums and albums that contained a series of duets with Porter Wagoner. This success continued as her records peaked in the 1970’s and 1980’s, but Parton’s album sold less in the following decade. Her commercial success made a comeback in the 2000’s as she released various albums from independent labels, including her own label, Dolly Records.

EARLY LIFE
- Dolly Parton was born in Locust Ridge, Tennessee on January 19, 1946.
- Parton was raised by her poor family in rural Appalachia.
- Dolly came from a family with 12 children. Money was always an issue.
- However, poverty did not limit Dolly Parton’s passion for music. Her family enjoyed music. Her mother sang and played guitar.
- In addition to family influences, Dolly learned about music as she performed in church.
- It was not long before Dolly started writing her own songs. She began songwriting as soon she received her first guitar from a relative.
- Soon enough, at the young age of 10, Dolly started performing professionally as she made appearances on local television and radio shows in Knoxville.
- In 1959, at the age of 13, Dolly debuted on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, a weekly American country music stage concert in Nashville, Tennessee.
- After finishing high school, a music and career-oriented Dolly Parton moved to Nashville.
CAREER LIFE
- Dolly partnered with Porter Wagoner, another country music singer who had his own television show, The Porter Wagoner Show, as her career started to take off in 1967.
- Porter Wagoner and Dolly Parton became a success as they recorded country hits together.
- Parton’s partnership with Porter helped her sign a contract with RCA Records, an American record label owned by Sony Music that released music in different genres like pop, classical, rock, hip hop, afrobeat, electronic, R&B, blues, jazz, and country.
- It was in 1971 when Dolly hit #1 on the country music charts with her song, Joshua, a bluegrass-inspired track about two people who find love.
- This was followed by other tracks that hit #1, such as Jolene, a song in which a woman begs another beautiful woman not to take her man.
- Another track that hit the top of the charts was her tribute to Porter Wagoner as they parted ways in order for Dolly to pursue a solo career. This was the timeless song, “I Will Always Love You.”
- Because of her compelling and phenomenal tracks that fall into the country-music genre, Dolly Parton won the Country Music Association Award for female vocalist in two consecutive years, 1975 and 1976.
- One of her greatest hits hit the airwaves in 1977, as she debuted the song “Here You Come Again.” It was a bittersweet ode to a returning lover. Not only did the song reach the top 3 in the country music charts, it also marked her first ever Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female.
- Dolly Parton was an actress as well, her debut in acting was in the hit comedy titled 9 to 5; and being the versatile artist we know she is, Dolly also contributed to the film’s soundtrack.
- Dolly then starred in the 1982 film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, in which Dolly introduced her song “I Will Always Love You” to a new generation of audiences.
- In 1986, Dolly Parton engaged in a new type of venture as she opened her own theme park called Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, which is still a popular destination to this date.
- Her 1999 album, The Grass is Blue, won her sixth Grammy for best bluegrass album.
- When she won another Grammy in 2001, Dolly Parton was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
- In 2008, Parton released an album titled Backwoods Barbie.
- According to a press release by Sony Music in 2018, Dolly Parton is still setting up new records while receiving accolades and awards.

- The world’s first cloned sheep was named after Dolly Parton in 1996.
- Dolly Parton is the godmother to another music icon, pop singer and actress, Miley Cyrus.

- Dolly Parton was named a Living Legend by the Library of Congress in 2004.
- The following year, she received the U.S. government’s National Medal of Arts.
