What is a homonym?
- Breaking down the word ‘homonym’ helps you understand what it is more easily. ‘Homo’ comes from the ancient Greek word ‘homos’, which means ‘same’, and ‘nym’ comes from the ancient Greek word ‘onoma’, which means ‘name’.
- Homonym literally means ‘same name’.
- When two or more words have the same pronunciation and spelling but have different meanings, they are called homonyms.
What is a homograph?
- Now we know that ‘homo’ means ‘same’, we can learn that ‘graph’ comes from the Greek word ‘graphe’ and means ‘write’.
- So homograph literally means ‘same writing’.
- Homographs are, therefore, words that are spelled the same but can have different meanings and pronunciation.
What is a homophone?
- You guessed it! ‘Homo’ means ‘same’, and ‘phone’ comes from the Greek word ‘phone’, which means ‘sound’.
- So homophone literally means same sound.
- Homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and spelling.
