George W. Bush is the 43rd President of the United States (2001-2009). He was the Governor of Texas and is the son of former President George H.W Bush. It was during his term that the 9/11 attacks were carried out, and this led to the war in Afghanistan. See the fact file below for more information on George W. Early Life:
- George W. Bush was born on July 6, 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut, and is the eldest son of the 41st U.S President George H.W Bush and Barbara Pierce. Young George attended a public school in Midland, Texas and the Kinkaid School in Houston. In 1964, he finished high school at the Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts and subsequently studied at Yale University where he graduated in 1968.
- In May 1968, he joined the Texas Air National Guard and was a member until November 1974. In 1973, he simultaneously attended Harvard Business School, where he studied until 1975.
- On November 5, 1977, he married Laura Welch with whom he has two daughters. In the same year, he started his own oil company called Arbusto Energy, which was later changed to Bush Exploration.
- He lost when he ran for a seat in the U.S House of Representatives in 1978, but ten years later, he helped his father George H.W Bush during his presidential campaign.
- Bush became the general manager of the Texas Rangers baseball team from 1989 until he sold his shares in 1998.
- In 1994, he ran for Governor of Texas, where he served until 2000. He was nominated as the Republican Party’s Presidential candidate against Democrat Al Gore.
Bush won the 2000 election after the Supreme Court decision landed in his favor. The votes in Florida were recounted, but in the end Bush got 271-266 electoral votes, defeating Al Gore.
George W. Bush’s Presidency
- On January 20, 2001, George W. Bush took his oath as the 43rd President of the United States at the West Front, in the U.S Capitol. In April of the same year, he expressed his support of Taiwan in the event of an attack from China.
- In June, he signed a package of tax relief bills which was followed by another package of tax cut bills in 2003.
- On September 11 2001, four commercial planes were hijacked by terrorists from the Islamic extremist group Al Qaeda. Two crashed into the World Trade Center buildings in New York City, one crashed into the Pentagon in Washington D.C and the other landed in a field in Pennsylvania. It is believed to have been intended for the White House.
- Nine days later, President Bush announced the beginning of the “War on Terror” in front of Congress. He specifically ordered a manhunt for Al-Qaeda’s leader Osama bin Laden, and the terrorist hijackings became known as the 9/11 attacks.
- In October, Bush signed the USA Patriot Act which allowed law enforcement to root out suspected terrorists in America.
- The “Enduring Freedom” mission also started in October. It was a military offensive mission in Afghanistan intended to ensure the capture of Osama bin Laden.
- Before 2001 ended, the U.S informed Russia of their intention to withdraw from the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, so they could conduct anti-missile defense tests. Officially, the U.S withdrew six months later.
- The education reform bill, also known as the “No Child Left Behind” Act was signed in January 2002. Each state was given the authority to set standards and administer assessment tests.
- In June 2002, the Office of Homeland Security was created, and was specifically designed to ensure the protection of the U.S against terrorism.
- President Bush was authorized by the Senate to invade Iraq on October 10, 2002. The invasion was permitted due to the Iraqi violations of several U.N resolutions. In March
- 2003, combat operations started, and these were completed by May.
- The Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act of 2003 was signed in November. The bill prohibited late-term abortions.
- Bush won the re-election in 2004, but in August 2005, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, and many Americans found the response of the Bush administration to be inadequate. In October and November of 2008, he signed bailout plans for several banks and the automobile industry worth nearly $800 billion.
Post-Presidency:
- George and Laura Bush stayed in their home in Midland, Texas before moving to Dallas. In November 2010, he released his autobiography called Decision Points. The Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund was established in 2010 after the major earthquake that devastated the Caribbean nation.
- On May 2, 2011, he received a call from President Barack Obama saying that Osama bin Laden had been killed by U.S operatives in Pakistan. That September, he attended the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York City, along with President Obama.
- On April 25, 2013, the George W. Bush Presidential Center was opened in Dallas, Texas and it includes the Presidential Library and Museum, as well as the Institute and Foundation.
- He is rarely seen in public in his retirement.
