Biology is the area of science that covers all living things. It ranges from microscopic cells, all the way through plants and animals, to the human body. While biology isn’t usually a separate curriculum subject until high school, topics that come under the umbrella of biology for kids are taught from kindergarten onwards.
Why is it important to teach kids biology?
Biology is made up of many interesting topics that kids will be really excited to learn: bacteria, cloning, microscopes, and animals, to name a few. Every question they’ve ever asked about their own body, and most of the world around them, has an answer in biology.
What’s more, teaching biology shows kids how they relate to the environment around them — it encourages them to appreciate the synchronicity all around us, and really recognize their own place in it.
Kids are largely hands-on learners, and biology offers an excellent opportunity to come in contact with the very things that you’re teaching them. But backing these tactile experiences up with the best possible printed resources helps kids solidify the amazing things they’re witnessing.
Fun biology worksheets for kids
Kids tend to have a fascination with blood — and for good reason! Blood keeps us alive, but they rarely encounter it unless they fall over in the playground. This 23-page worksheet bundle with an attached lesson plan will set you up with everything you need. It’s full of fun facts that’ll wow your students: did you know that there are trace amounts of gold in human blood?
The lesson plan even contains a recipe for fake blood — you could make a batch to really give the kids a class they’ll remember. You could end the lesson with a chat about blood donation and why it’s so important to give blood. Obviously, they’ll be too young to donate themselves, but you could set up a mini-campaign where they can make flyers for the adults in their lives, stressing the pressing need.
Photosynthesis facts & worksheets
Photosynthesis is the process that plants use to get energy from the sun. It’s also the reason why plants are green — they absorb green wavelengths from the sun. This is a fun lesson to do with kids, as you can bring a collection of leaves and plants into the classroom to help you demonstrate.
This lesson will teach kids that without photosynthesis, there would be no carbon cycle, and therefore wouldn’t be enough oxygen in our atmosphere for us to breathe. We also wouldn’t have any food to eat. It’s a nice reminder for them that nature is absolutely essential to our health and wellbeing.
As well as a huge list of fun facts and information you can use to teach a lesson, this bundle has 26 pages of colorful worksheets for your students. One of the activities asks kids to collect six leaves from outside and use a table to catalog them by their shape and color.
Sense organs facts & worksheets
This is a really fun lesson, that covers all five senses: sight, vision, taste, touch, and hearing. It can be a super hands-on class with mini-experiments, where the students can use their own bodies to learn.
The lesson plan takes them through all the different sense organs and explores how some animals have different levels of senses. For example, sea animals like dolphins have a weakened sense of smell, but really strong taste buds. Sharks even have a sixth sense, which helps them detect electricity (but that’s a topic for another day..!).
The 26-page worksheet bundle has activities like find-a-word and various diagrams. There’s also a fun experiment you can do, to help students map out the different regions of the tongue with different foods. Sweet foods will taste stronger in one area, sour foods in another. Use a cotton swab to put a tiny amount of different flavors on the tongue (e.g. honey, lemon, saltwater) and ask students to fill out the chart.
This is another interactive lesson that you’ll be able to supplement with loads of props. And it’s the one time your kids will be encouraged to eat food in class!
Nutrition is the science of how the food we eat gives us energy. The fact file has everything you need to teach your kids about the importance of our diets, and how different foods can serve us in different ways. You’ll be able to teach them about the food pyramid, and how certain foods, like carbohydrates, give them the energy to play all day long.
As a class, you can come up with fun daily meal plans, so kids can learn about essential foods as opposed to “sometimes” foods. These 11 worksheets are really in-depth, challenging students to retain all the information from your nutrition lesson.
Excretory system facts & worksheets
Let’s face it, kids love to talk about going to the toilet. So your students will get a good laugh when they hear that’s what their lesson will be all about and, hopefully, it’ll keep them engaged.
The excretory system is much more than they’d imagine, though. It’s a complex system of connected organs that deal with helping waste leave the body. It’s really interesting to map out the path that waste makes from our stomach, through the kidneys and intestines, to our bladder and colon. Our skin is also technically an excretory organ, because we sweat through it!
The 25 full-color worksheets will take your kids on a journey through the human body with activities to help them remember the key terms and concepts.
The brain is amazing. It’s the most complex part of the body — it’s so complicated that there are many things about it doctors still don’t know or understand. This lesson can be really fun, especially when you remind students that they’ll have to use their brains to learn all about brains!
The brain is divided into many sections, and each section plays an important role in keeping your body working like normal. There’s a lot of information to wrap your head around, but the fact file in this worksheet bundle will help you lay out all the essential information for your students.
The 21 worksheets have loads of activities, including word jumbles and color diagrams.

Worksheets are undoubtedly an essential tool when teaching students such a complex area like science. Supplement them with hands-on experiments and demonstrations, and it’ll become their favorite topic in no time.
