Raphael was a renowned Italian painter and architect of High Renaissance Classicism. He is best known for his The School of Athens and Sistine Madonna. Along with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, they were considered the trinity of great masters of that era.

Early Life
- Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, commonly known as Raphael, was born on April 6, 1483, in Urbino, Italy. He was the son of Giovanni Santi, Duke of Urbino’s court painter. Young Rafael learned basic techniques of painting through his father.
- When he was eight, his mother died followed by his father when he was 11. In order to make a living, he took over his father’s workshop and slowly made his mark as a local painter.
- In 1500, he became an apprentice to master painter Pietro Vannucci, also known as Perugino.
- As an apprentice, he traveled to Perugia in central Italy. For four years, Raphael gained experience and knowledge as a painter.
Raphael’s Career
- While under apprenticeship, Raphael developed his own painting style. He painted a number of religious pieces including Mond Crucifixion in 1502, The Three Graces in 1503, The Knight’s Dream in 1504, and Marriage of the Virgin in 1504.
- In 1504, after his apprenticeship ended, Raphael moved to Florence and was heavily influenced by the works of Masaccio, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Fra Bartolommeo.
- From 1504 to 1507, he produced a series of Madonnas. In 1508, before moving to Rome, he painted Entombment. Living in Rome was at the invitation of the new Pope Julius II.
- From 1509 to 1511, he worked on frescoes, including The Triumph of Religion and The School of Athens, which are located in Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican.
- In addition to his fresco cycles in the Vatican, Raphael filled the Stanza d’Eliodoro with The Expulsion of Heliodorus, The Miracle of Bolsena, The Liberation of Saint Peter and The Repulse of Attila from Rome. At the same time, he painted Madonna of the Chair and Sistine Madonna in his private studio.
- By 1514, Raphael had gained prominence for his works at the Vatican. He was able to hire assistants who helped him finish the frescoes. At the same time, he was also commissioned to paint portraits of popes Julius II and Leo X. That same year, Raphael was designated by the new pope to be the chief architect of a chapel in Sant’ Eligio degli Orefici. In addition, he also designed Rome’s Santa Maria del Popolo Chapel.
- The death of his predecessor, Donato Bramante inspired Raphael’s architectural works. In addition, Raphael employed ornamental detail in his design, which later defined the architectural style of the late Renaissance and early Baroque era.
Later Life, Death and Legacy
- Raphael was engaged to Maria Bibbiena, but the two never got married. Speculations rose that Raphael had a mistress named Margherita Luti, while others thought that he wanted to become a Cardinal.
- Among his other works are Galatea, which depicts the mythological character of Polyphemus and The Sacrifice at Lystra, showing Paul and Barnabas.
- At the time of his death, Raphael was working on The Transfiguration, which was left unfinished.
- On his 37th birthday, April 6, 1520, Raphael unexpectedly died in Rome, Italy. The cause is unknown. His funeral mass was held at the Vatican and his body was interred in the Pantheon.
- Raphael is considered one of the leading figures of Italian High Renaissance Classicism. He was knighted by Pope Leo X with the Papal Order of the Golden Spur for his contributions to the Catholic Church.
