EARLY LIFE
- Alexis Alejandro Sánchez was born on December 19, 1988, in Tocopilla, Chile.
- His father is Guillermo Soto and his mother is Martina Sánchez. Alexis has three siblings.
- Growing up, his family struggled financially. Alexis’s father abandoned the family.
- As a child, Alexis would wash cars to earn money. The first football boots he received were from the mayor of his hometown.
- He was known in his community as “The Squirrel.”
- When Alexis was 10, his uncle took him to Rancagua to train at the Youth Academy of Universidad Católica. He was also trained by C.D. Cobreloa’s Youth Academy.
CLUB CAREER
- In 2005, Sánchez was promoted to the senior team of Cobreloa.
- The following season, he was signed by the Italian club Udinese. During his first year with the club, he was loaned to the Chilean club Colo-Colo, which he debuted for in June 2006.
- Sánchez impressed as he became a team starter. Colo-Colo won the 2006 Torneo Clausura and the 2007 Apertura.
- After one year with the club, he joined the Argentine club River Plate, still on loan from Udinese.
- In 2008, River Plate topped the Argentina Clausura. Alexis left the club after a successful season. In July 2008, he finally joined Udinese.
- In his first season, Sánchez suffered from a slump, though he quickly recovered as he scored crucial goals for the team.
- Sánchez helped Udinese reach the semi-finals of the 2009–10 Coppa Italia.
- In February 2011, Alexis scored four goals as Udinese defeated Palermo 7–0. He was known for his good chemistry with striker Antonio Di Natale.
- In July 2011, Barcelona confirmed the transfer of Sánchez for €26 million.
- Though affected by minor injuries in his first season, Alexis helped his team win the 2011 UEFA Super Cup, 2011 Supercopa de España, 2012 Copa del Rey, and 2011 FIFA Club World Cup.
- The next season, Alexis helped the team win the 2012–13 La Liga and the 2013 Supercopa de España. He finished as one of the top scorers in the 2013–14 La Liga.
- In July 2014, Sánchez transferred to the English club Arsenal. His first season with the club was praised as he showed his scoring ability. He was named to the PFA Team of the Year and declared the 2015 PFA Fans’ Player of the Year.
- He scored and helped his team win the 2015 FA Cup Final. He was later named Arsenal’s Player of the Year.
- Though briefly affected by injuries, Alexis continued to score goals for his team during his second season.
- He finished the 2016–17 Premier League as one of the top goalscorers. Sánchez scored in the final that won his team the FA Cup. In May 2017, he was named Arsenal’s Player of the Season.
- In January 2018, Sánchez moved to Manchester United.
- In August 2019, Sánchez joined Inter Milan on loan but made his transfer permanent in August 2020.
- Inter Milan finished second in the 2019-20 UEFA Europa League.
INTERNATIONAL CAREER
- Sánchez debuted for Chile in April 2006. He represented the country in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2011 Copa América.
- Alexis helped in Chile’s successful 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign. At the tournament, he scored several times for the team but they failed to make it past the Round of 16.
- Chile hosted the 2015 Copa América. They eventually won the final as Sánchez made the winning shot against Argentina in a penalty shootout.
- Chile successfully defended its title in the 2016 Copa América Centenario. Alexis was awarded the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament and was named to the Team of the Tournament.
- Chile failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Sánchez participated in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup where Chile finished second. In the 2019 Copa América, Chile finished fourth.
OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL
- In October 2015, Sánchez became an ambassador for Huawei. Alexis became an ambassador for Pepsi in February 2017.
- In March 2017, a statue of Alexis was erected in Tocopilla.
- He is known by the nickname “El Niño Maravilla” (The Wonder Child) among fans.
- Alexis had football fields built in his hometown.
