- Phonics derives from the Greek word “phono”, which means sound or voice. Therefore, phonics is teaching students about the relationship between the sound of a letter (also known as a phoneme), and the letter or groups of letters of a written language that represent it (these are called graphemes).
- Phonics can be taught by learning individual sounds and their corresponding letters, or by learning the sounds of groups of letters.
- Learning groups of letters involves rimes (which are vowel and consonant pairs like “at” or “ed”), and consonant clusters, which are pairs of consonants like “bl” or “sh”.
- Once these groups are established, syllables, or groups of groups can be taught to blend, such as ch + op = chop
