Brisbane is located in the Queensland state of Australia, and is considered its capital city as well as the most populated city in this state. Not only it is the most populous city in Queensland, it is also the third most populated city in Australia: Brisbane’s metropolitan area has approximately 2.56 million people (as of June 2019,) while the South East Metropolitan region centered in Brisbane is populated by more than 3.6 million people.

Key Facts & Information

HISTORY

  • BEFORE THE 19th CENTURY
    • Before white settlement, Indigenous Australians are believed to have inhabited South East Queensland.
    • There were an estimate of 6,000 to 10,000 Indigenous Australian individuals that inhabited South East Queensland for 22,000 years.
    • The Indigenous people who inhabited the Brisbane area at this time were the Jagera people, including the Turrbal group.
    • The central business district of Brisbane was known as Mian-jin by its indigenous inhabitants.
    • The name Mian-jin means “place shaped as a spike.”
  • 19th CENTURY
    • The exploration of Moreton Bay—a bay located on the eastern coast of Australia, 14 kilometres from central Brisbane, Queensland—started on behalf of European colonists, and was led by Matthew Flinders.
    • Flinders was an English navigator and cartographer who led the second circumnavigation of Australia.
    • On July 17, 1799, Flinders landed on Woody Point, and named it as “Red Cliff Point” because of the red-coloured cliffs visible from the bay.
    • In 1823, Sir Thomas Brisbane, Governor of New South Wales, ordered the development of a new penal settlement, and to form a new exploration party to be led by John Oxley.
    • The objective of this party was to further explore Moreton Bay.
    • Oxley claimed, explored, and named the Brisbane River.
    • The party settled in Redcliffe on 13 September 1824, after Oxley recommended Cliff Point for the new colony. It was done under the command of Lieutenant Henry Miller.
    • The colony was abandoned after a year and moved on to North Quay, a site on Brisbane River, for a more abundant water supply. However the site was plagued by mosquitoes.
    • The city was first named Edenglassie, given by Chief Justice Forbes, before it was named Brisbane.
  • 20th CENTURY
    • In 1925, governed by the Brisbane City Council, over 20 municipalities participated in order to form the City of Brisbane.
    • 1930 was a significant year for Brisbane, because it was when important establishments in Brisbane were built to completion, such as the Brisbane City Hall, governed by the Brisbane City Council, the Shrine of Remembrance (the tallest building in Brisbane located in ANZAC Square), which is Brisbane’s war memorial.
    • In 1940, the Story Bridge opened along with the mentioned historic buildings, these are the key landmarks that shaped the architecture of the city.
  • WORLD WAR II
    • In 1940, the AMP Building was used as South West Pacific headquarters for the chief of the Allied Forces, General Douglas MacArthur.
    • Brisbane became central to the Allied campaign.
    • In 1942, Brisbane was the site of a violent clash between visiting US militia and Australian servicemen and civilians. The incident became known as the Battle of Brisbane.

CULTURE AND ART

  • Brisbane is known to have a substantial live theater and music scene, both new and classical.
  • On December 2006, the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) was opened. It is one of the latest additions to the South Bank precinct.
  • GOMA is the largest modern art gallery in Australia, holding the Asia Pacific Triennial (APT): focusing on contemporary art from Asia and the Pacific in a variety of media. The gallery features some of the most well-known pieces of modern art.
  • From paintings to video work, its size is designed to culminate large shows, such as the Andy Warhol Exhibitions.
  • GOMA has the largest purpose-built cinematheque, located next to the State Library of Queensland and Queensland Art Gallery.

NOTABLE PEOPLE

  • Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, a pioneer aviator who made the first flight across the Pacific using his aircraft named “Southern Cross”, was born in Brisbane.
  • Irene Chou, a long-term resident of Brisbane, was a Chinese artist who was one of the most influential exponents of the New Ink Movement in Hong Kong during the 1960s and 1970s.
  • Other notable people from Brisbane are: Lord Atkin, judge of the English High Court; Bill Hayden, former Governor-General of Australia; Emma Miller, pioneer labour activist and suffragist; Sir William Webb, High Court of Australia Judge and President of the Military Tribunal in the Far East.

ANNUAL EVENTS

  • Ekka, an annual agricultural show, is held each August. Its formal title is the Royal Queensland Show.
  • The River Festival is held every September at South Bank Parklands and surrounding areas.
  • The Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF) is held every July/August.
