Key Facts & Information
BASICS OF FRACTIONS
- Simply defined, a fraction is part of a whole. There are many different kinds of fraction:
- Proper fraction – A fraction in which the numerator is smaller than the denominator. Therefore, the value of a proper fraction is always less than one.
- Improper fraction – A fraction in which the numerator is equal to or larger than the denominator. Improper fractions are often changed to whole or mixed numbers. All improper fractions are equal to or larger than 1.
- Mixed number – A number that is a combination of a whole number and a proper fraction. It is a mix of two kinds of number.
- Similar fractions – Fractions with the same denominator.
- Dissimilar fractions – Fractions with different denominators.
- Equivalent fractions – Fractions that have the same value.
- Any mixed fraction can be changed into an improper fraction by multiplying the denominator by the whole number, adding the product to the number, and then placing the total over the original denominator.
- The improper fraction can be changed into a mixed number by dividing the numerator by the denominator with the quotient as the whole number, the remainder as the numerator of the fractional part, and the divisor as the denominator.
- Fractions can also be changed into their simplest form. If itβs an equivalent fraction, which is better represented in its simplified or reduced form, reduce your answer to the lowest term whenever possible, using their common factor.
ADDING FRACTIONS
- To add fractions, follow these steps:
- If the fractions are similar, simply add the numerators and copy the denominator.
- If the fractions are dissimilar, make them similar by finding their lowest common denominator (LCD). Perform the operation afterward.
- To add mixed numbers, add the whole numbers, then the fraction part, and put them together.
SUBTRACTING FRACTIONS
- To subtract fractions, follow these steps:
- If the fractions are similar, just subtract the numerators and copy the denominator.
- If the fractions are dissimilar, make them similar by finding their LCD. Perform the operation afterward.
- To add mixed numbers, add the whole numbers, then the fraction part, and put them together.
- When subtracting fractions, there are some cases where you cannot subtract both numerators, when the subtrahend is greater than the minuend. In a case like this, regrouping or borrowing is needed.
MULTIPLYING FRACTIONS
- When multiplying a fraction by another fraction, multiply the numerators first, then the denominators, then simplify.
- When multiplying a fraction by a whole number, make the whole number a fraction by placing 1 as the denominator, then multiply. Simplify whenever possible.
DIVIDING FRACTIONS
- To divide a fraction by another fraction, change the divisor to its reciprocal and multiply it to the dividend. Simplify.
- To divide a fraction or a whole number by a fraction, multiply the fraction or the whole number by the reciprocal of the divisor. Then proceed with multiplying the fractions. Simplify.
