TWO-DIMENSIONAL SHAPES
- Two-dimensional shapes can be analyzed through their number of sides or edges, corners or vertices, and the characteristic of the lines, whether straight or curved.
- The first shape, a square, has a straight edge, while the second shape, a circle, has a curved edge.
- Below are some shapes and the number of edges they have.
- Even though the circle has a curved edge, it is still considered as a shape with no sides, since in the definition, an edge must connect one vertex to another. Thus, a circle has no edges.
THREE-DIMENSIONAL SHAPES
- Three-dimensional shapes also have edges, and corners or vertices. In addition, three-dimensional shapes also have faces.
- A face is any of the individual flat surfaces of a solid object or of a three-dimensional shape.
- Just like in two-dimensional shapes, the corners and edges of a three-dimensional shape can also be identified.
TWO-DIMENSIONAL AND THREE-DIMENSIONAL SHAPES
- We can analyze a two-dimensional shape by understanding its edges and corners/vertices. On the other hand, we can analyze a three-dimensional shape by understanding its edges, corners/vertices, and faces.
- There are also other ways that we can analyze shapes, for example the length of the sides.
CREATING SHAPES
- Combining shapes results in another shape.
- For example, combining 2 triangles can result in a square.
- Another example is combining 2 squares to form a rectangle.
- There are more shapes that can be created by combining different shapes.
PRACTICE
- The best way for young learners to fully understand how to analyze shapes and how to create shapes is by letting them practice by completing activities.
