EARLY LIFE
- Antoni Gaudi i Cornet was born on June 25, 1852.
- Antoni Gaudi’s exact birthplace is unknown due to a lack of documents that would provide this information.
- He may have been born in Riudoms in Baix Camp District, a town in the province of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain; or in Reus, the Capital of Baix Camp, also in Tarragona.
- Most of Antoni’s identification documents, as student and professional, stated that he was born in Reus. However, Gaudí himself stated on some occasions that he was born in his paternal family village, Riudoms.
- Antoni Gaudi was the son of a coppersmith, Francesc Gaudí i Serra, and Antònia Cornet i Bertran.
- Antoni Gaudi was the youngest among the five children of Francesc and Antònia’s children, of whom only three survived to adulthood. Antoní’s siblings were Rosa and Francesca.
- The Gaudí family ancestry can be traced to the Auvergne region of southern France.
- Joan Gaudí was one of their ancestors, she was a hawker that moved to Catalonia in the 17th Century.
- The possible origins of the Gaudí family name include Gaudy or Gaudin.
- The Gaudí family home is located on Riudoms, and called the “El mas de la Calderera.”
- Antoni Gaudí, in his younger years, unfortunately suffered from poor health. He even suffered from rheumatism as a kid, a condition that made his joints hurt. So it was speculated by historians that it contributed to his somewhat reserved or introverted character.
- Since the young Gaudí’s health was poor, the hygienist theories of Dr. Sebastian Kneipp influenced him to adopt and practice vegetarianism early in his life.
- The practice of vegetarianism, along with his religious faith, included fasting, which is often unhealthy. Soon enough, this practice would cause life-threatening illness to Gaudi in 1894.
- As a child, Gaudí had the chance to study nature by spending time outdoors, particularly during summer stays in Mas de la Calderera.
- Gaudí developed an interest for arts in design, particularly in their native design, starting from his childhood.
EDUCATION AND WORK
- In his early education, Antoni Gaudí attended a nursery school that was operated by a guy named Francesc Berenguer.
- Berenguer’s son was also named Francesc. Later on, he became one of Gaudí’s main assistants.
- Later on, Gaudí had shown his artistic talents via drawing as soon as he enrolled in the Piarist school in Reus.
- He showcased his artistic talents in a seminar called El Arlequin (the Harlequin).
- Gaudí was also working as an apprentice in the “Vapor Nou” textile mill in Reus while at the same time studying in the Piarists school.
- Antoni Gaudí moved to Barcelona in 1868.
- In Barcelona, Spain, Antoni Gaudí proceeded to study teaching in the Convent del Carme.
- The adolescent Antoni Gaudí became interested in the theories of utopian socialism.
- Along with his fellow students, Gaudí planned a restoration of the Poblet Monastery to transform it into a Utopian phalanstery.
- Gaudi completed his compulsory military service between 1875 and 1878.
- His mother died at the age of 57, as well as his 25-year old brother, Francesc, in 1876.
- In 1876, Gaudí also studied architecture at Llotja School and the Barcelona Higher School of Architecture. He graduated in 1878.
- He worked as a draughtsman for various constructors to finance his studies.
ADULTHOOD AND PROFESSIONAL LIFE
- Antoni Gaudi’s first projects included lamp posts designed for the Plaça Reial, Barcelona, newsstands in Girossi, and the Workers’ Cooperative of Mataro building.
- His first significant commission was the Casa Vicens, which led to more significant proposals.
- Gaudí displayed a showcase at the Paris World’s Fair in 1878, produced for Comella, a glove manufacturer.
- He became part of the Modernista movement under the influence of neo-Gothic art and Oriental techniques.
- The showcase impressed Eusebi Güell, a Catalan industrialist, who commissioned Gaudís most significant works: The Güell palace, the Güell park, and the crypt of the church of the Colònia Güell.
- In 1883, he was put in charge of building a Barcelona church: Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia, a project that he devoted from 1915 until his death.
DEATH
- On June 7, 1926, Gaudí was struck by a number 30 tram, a railway vehicle, while walking along the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, on his way to work.
- He was brought to the Santa Creu Hospital to receive medical aid.
- Unfortunately, Gaudí died on June 10, 1926.
