Key Facts & Information
EARLY LIFE
- Stephen Gary Wozniak was born in San Jose, California on August 11, 1950. Wozniak was the son of an engineer at Lockheed Martin.
- Wozniak was interested in electronics from childhood. Although he was never a star student who excelled academically, Wozniak could build electronic devices from scratch.
- Wozniak later attended the University of Colorado for one year before dropping out. When he moved back to California, he attended the University of Berkeley, and later received a bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in 1987.
- In the early 1970s, Wozniak started his career as an employee at several electronic firms in the San Francisco Bay area before interning with Hewlett-Packard in 1975.
- During his internship, he also became involved with the Homebrew Computer Club, where the group was focused on building a microcomputer do-it-yourself kit.
THE RISE OF APPLE COMPUTER
- Wozniak and Steve Jobs met in Wozniak’s college days, while Jobs was still in high school, through a mutual friend.
- While he was still a Homebrew member, Wozniak designed his own microcomputer using the new microprocessors from Intel. Jobs was amused by Wozniak’s design and they decided to work together.
- The first Apple office started from a family garage. Using Wozniak’s computer design, he and Jobs attempted to produce a more user-friendly computer compared to other products that were being released at the time.
- Wozniak worked on the design and invention, and Jobs was responsible for marketing. Shortly after the company was established, Wozniak created the Apple I, entirely built in Jobs’ garage. At first, Apple I was a kit computer meant for hobbyists. The sales were good and Wozniak began to develop another product as Apple I successor.
- In 1977, Wozniak and Jobs launched Apple II. The product had colored graphics, and a consumer-friendly case. Wozniak was responsible for the hardware and circuits, while Jobs took care of the design.
- Apple II attracted a lot of interest due to its unique design and user-friendly interface. With the Apple II’s sales success, Apple went public in 1980, having market value reaching $1 billion. This made Wozniak an instant millionaire.
- Wozniak remained as an Apple employee until 1985.
AFTER APPLE
- In 1981, Wozniak had a plane accident while taking off in his plane from Santa Cruz Sky Park. He suffered a variety of injuries and amnesias and took two years to recover.
- Once recovered, he got involved in several tech organizations including the development of CL9, the first programmable universal remote control.
- In 1990, he joined Mitchell Kapor in establishing the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an organization that provides legal aid for computer hackers facing criminal prosecution. He also developed wireless GPS technology through his newly founded company, the Wheels of Zeus (WoZ) in 2002.
- In 2006, WoZ was closed. Wozniak later published his autobiography and in 2008 he joined a startup company, Fusion-io, as its chief scientist.
LEGACY
- Wozniak has received several honors for his contributions to technology. In 1985, together with Jobs, he received the National Medal of Technology from US President Ronald Reagan.
- In September 2000, Wozniak was included in the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
- Wozniak has also been generous with his own money and has given funding to a variety of causes. His notable philanthropist work was when he took out his own $10 million worth of Apple stocks and sold it to Apple employees cheaply.
- He’s not the richest man in the world, but for Wozniak, success is about making everyone have a better life.
