Technology is present in almost every aspect of our lives as digital citizens. It is obvious how much it improves our daily life, making it easier and faster to accomplish tasks and helping us stay connected with one another. Although our devices are always within reach, we must set boundaries and establish good digital habits in order to take care of our health and wellbeing.
See the fact file below for more information on the Digital Wellbeing or alternatively, you can download our 25-page Digital Wellbeing worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
Defining Digital Wellbeing
- “Digital wellbeing is about crafting and maintaining a healthy relationship with technology. It’s about how technology serves us and moves us towards our goals, rather than distracting us, interrupting us or getting in the way. Being in control of technology enables us to use its full potential and gain all the benefits of it.” – Google Digital Garage, Digital Wellbeing Course
- In this definition, Google sees technology as a tool that serves people and not the other way around.
- Technology is an essential tool, but we must remember that it should not take over our lives.
- People who are glued to their devices and feel uneasy a second after they put them down are slaves to technology.
- In the Merriam Webster dictionary, wellbeing is defined as “the state of being happy, healthy, or prosperous”. It is about how people feel satisfied with their lives and how well they cope with life events.
- Digital wellbeing is about using digital technologies to help us grow and improve as digital citizens and as human beings.
- It is about being conscious of the positive and negative effects of using digital technologies. Using this knowledge will help digital citizens avoid harmful behaviors and practice good digital habits.
- Using digital technologies should have a positive impact on all areas, including mental, physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. They should be a tool that supports whole-person development.
- Alicja Shah, writer of JISC blog post Defining Digital Wellbeing, used this chart to show what makes up a healthy digital citizen.
Establishing Good Digital Habits
- As a digital citizen, you need to be aware of your tech usage. It is good to monitor how much time you spend on your devices and what you do with that time (is it productive or not?). Having this awareness will bring you a step towards improved digital wellbeing.
- You can choose to use apps to monitor your screen time or do it manually. There are apps that may make this task so much easier, like Digital Wellbeing by Google that shows you an overview of your daily digital activity (e.g. how much time you spend on each app).
- We often think that doing multiple tasks on screen can improve productivity, but this is not the case. We are not saving time when we do this. Jumping from one task to another can make a person feel overwhelmed and ruin their focus. It is better to do one task well and accomplish it sooner.
- We must do our best to avoid distractions when working. We can do is manage our notifications (or put our device on silent mode) and remove distracting apps from our home screen.
- There are also apps available online that play ambient noise, helping users focus on digital tasks and be productive. One example is Noisili, an app that allows you to “customize your perfect environment by mixing together different earthly sounds, ranging from rain, a train, to a fan and breezy leaves” (Doyle, 2019).
- We must remember to take a break in between tasks (even just a 5-10-minute break). You can rest your eyes by closing them for a couple of seconds or get up and do some stretches.
- We must also set limits when it comes to our devices. If our devices are always within reach, then we will always be tempted to use them even if we do not need to.
- Keeping our devices away from the bed or desk is a good option.
- We need to set time for digital detox and unplug from the digital world. This will force us to take a break and spend quality time with friends and family.
- List off-screen tasks that you enjoy and arrange them in your schedule. Taking a walk outside, reading a good book, or having a mindful cup of your favorite drink may help you take meaningful breaks.
- Working towards improved digital wellbeing does not mean you need to avoid your devices completely. It only means that the time you spend using your devices should be productive.
