LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to add and subtract multiples of ten from numbers within 10-90. They will be able to use various strategies to reach the correct outcome, such as number lines, ten frames, drawings, and pictures.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:
- When teaching adding and subtracting in multiples of ten, take note of the following:
- Students need to move beyond β10 moreβ and β10 lessβ, and be able to add and subtract in multiples of 10.
- Remind students to use place value strategies and various models such as drawings or number lines.
- Itβs important for student to be able to explain their reasoning using numbers, drawings/pictures or words.
THEORY:
- In previous lessons, students will have mastered 10 more and 10 less. This is done by having a concrete understanding of place value. So, for example,
- If we were to use a number line it would look like this:
- The same strategies apply when adding and subtracting multiples of 10.
- But, instead of one digit change in the tens unit, there will be more!
- For example, 5 tens minus 2 tens.
- 5 tens is 50, minus 2 tens is 20. So 50 – 20 = 30
- You can use ten frames too.
