See the fact file below for more information on the addition within 1000 or alternatively, you can download our 21-page Numbers and Operations in Base 10: Place Value – Addition within 1000 CCSS 3.NBT.2 (1) worksheet pack to utilise within the classroom or home environment.
Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to fluently add within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value and properties of operations.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When teaching addition within 1 000, try the following in your lesson:
- Ensure that the learner understands place value
- Always start adding from the ones, then tens, and then hundreds.
- If you are regrouping, always write the carried value in the correct place, ie., above the tens column or above the hundreds column.
THEORY
- Addition is the process of calculating the total of two or more numbers or amounts.
- HOW TO ADD WHOLE NUMBERS:
- Write the numbers, so each place value lines up vertically.
- Add the digits in each place value. Work from right to left, starting with the oneβs place. If a sum in a place value is more than 9, carry to the next place value.
- Continue adding each place value from right to left, adding each place value and carrying if needed. So we always start adding from the ones.
- Example: 157 + 5 – composing tens
- If we write it so that the place values line up, it will look as so:
- Example: 346 + 9 1 – composing hundreds
