- Generally, architecture is popularly known as a profession that draws houses, but technically, it is the art and science of designing and constructing different structures, such as houses and buildings.
- Professionals in this field are called architects.
- The term architect comes from the Greek words ‘arkhi’ (chief), and ‘tektōn’ which means’ means builder, craftsman, or woodworker.
- Architects express art through the different structures that they design.
- Among the earliest forms of architecture were ancient houses, pyramids, and temples.
- The first structures built by the ancient Greeks and Romans were made of clay, mud, marble, wood, and stone.
- They developed Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns, which were three column styles used until today.

Duties of An Architect
- When you hear the word architect, the first thing that comes to mind is to draw buildings.
- However, there are other responsibilities of an architect aside from drawing.

- Meet with their clients to discuss the structure they have to build.
- Architects must estimate how much the construction will cost and how long it will take to complete.
- They must also devise specifications for the structure.
- Draw the plan either by hand or digitally.
- Collaborate with other design teams.
- Look for contractors to build the structure.
- Supervise the construction and visit the sites to ensure they follow the plan.
Qualities of an Architect
- To be an architect requires a lot of hard work. Here are some of the important qualities needed to become one:
- Architects must be detail-oriented.
- They must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- They must be creative, imaginative, and have established knowledge and the ability to draw.
- They must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Architects must know how to conduct general business and carry out negotiations.
- They must know the different computer software needed, such as CADD.

Residential Architect
- They are architects who customize designs of houses or develop existing home plans.
- They may work for a single person or as home builders and developers.
Commercial Architect
- These architects specialize in working with establishments of public and private commercial buildings.
- Some examples of the structures they build are schools, offices, retail shops, museums, hospitals, government centers, and hotels.
Green Design Architect
- Green Design Architects are experts in designing environmental-friendly structures.
Urban Designer
- These architects specialize in developing on a larger scale, such as city planning.
- Instead of a single structure, they design a whole area.
Landscape Architect
- Landscape architects focus on designing recreational spaces such as parks, gardens, resorts, and walkways.
Interior Architect
- They are in charge of designing the interior spaces of a building.
- Part of their responsibility includes designing doors, windows, furnishers, and walls.
Industrial Architect
- Industrial architects specialize in building structures that emphasize functionality, such as power plants and airports.

Frank Lloyd Wright
- He was an American architect who made several contributions to architecture and designed over 1,000 structures for 70 years.
- He played a significant role during the 20th-century with his famous Prairie style, which at that time, became the foundation of residential design in the U.S.
- His famous designs included Fallingwater in Pennsylvania and the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.
Michelozzo di Bartolomeo Michelozzi
- Michelozzo was an Italian architect and considered one of the most notable architects during the Renaissance period.
- One of his most famous works is the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi in Florence.
Zaha Hadid
- Zaha Hadid was an Iraqi architect who is considered a legend in architecture.
- She was known for her neo-futuristic designs, and some of her famous works were the Guangzhou Opera House in China and Vitra Fire Station in Germany.
Louis Sullivan
- Louis Sullivan was an American architect who was also the mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright and known as the Father of Skyscrapers and the Father of Modernism.
- Garrick Theatre in Chicago and Wainwright Building in Missouri are two of his famous works.
