GRACES/CHARITIES
- Antheia was one of the Graces or Charities.
- There were several Graces (also known as Charis for Charities).
- A Grace or a Charis was a goddess of charm, beauty, nature, human creativity, goodwill, and fertility.
- The Graces were considered as the daughters of Zeus and Euronyme, an Oceanid.
- However, there were some who considered the Graces as daughters of Dionysus and Kronois, or of Helios and Aegle, a Naiad.
- The Graces were also known as the attendants of Aphrodite, and were associated with the Greek Underworld and the Eleusinian Mysteries.
- The Graces were said to be composed of just three (3) goddesses; however, there are a number of names associated with them.
- The usual three (3) names given by Hesiod are Aglaea which means “shining”, Euphrosyne which means “joy”, and Thalia which means “blooming”.
- Other names given to the Graces include Damia which means “Earth mother”, Auxesia which means “spring growth”, Cleta which means “renowned”, Phaenna which means “bright”, Hegemone which means “leader”, Pheito which means “persuasion”, Pasithea which means “relaxation”, Antheia which means “blossoms”, and Eudaimonia which means “happiness”.
- The main role of the Graces was to attend to other Olympians, especially during feasts and dances.
- As Aphrodite’s attendants, they attended to Aphrodite by bathing and anointing her in Paphos and after she left Olympus due to her affair with Ares being revealed.
- They also weaved Aphrodite’s peplos, a body-length garment for women.

- Antheia was also celebrated as the Greek goddess of marriage, represented by the rites of flowering, seeking a mate, and reaching perfections.
- Tol this day, modern Greeks still look up to Antheia to ask her to bless their ceremonies by enriching their souls so they, too, might achieve spiritual perfection.
- In the past, the Greeks celebrated Arretophoria, a festival to honor friendship and trust that was held every summer.
