BIOGRAPHY
- Jimmie Kenneth Johnson was born on September 17, 1975, in El Cajon, California, to Catherine Ellen and Gary Ernest Johnson.
- He has two younger brothers, Jarit and Jessie. At the age of four, he began to race motorcycles.
- Jimmie went to Granite Hills High, and graduated from high school in 1993. At weekends he would race motorcycles. He was also an avid swimmer, playing varsity water polo, diving, and swimming competitively.
- He is married to Chandra Janway, having known each other since 2002. They have two daughters, Genevieve and Lydia.
- Jimmie is also a triathlete, participating in triathlons and long-distance running.
- In 2019, Jimmie competed in the Boston Marathon.
OFF-ROAD RACING
- Jimmie started racing motorcycles in 1980 when he was four. In 1993, he won the 60cc class championship, despite having an injured knee.
- In 1993, he turned down an opportunity to drive for Herb Fishel. He continued racing buggies and trucks off-road.
- He reported for ESPN in the Short Course Off-Road Drivers Association (SODA).
- In 1996, Jimmie drove for Herzog Motorsports in the off-road truck series.
- By 1997, Jimmie progressed to SODA class 8, winning both races at Lake Geneva Raceways. He also won at Antigo and placed second at Gaughan.
ASA and BUSCH SERIES
- In 1997, he began on asphalt ovals, making his debut at Hawkeye Downs Speedway.
- In 1998, Jimmie won the ASA Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie title. He also made his debut in the NASCAR Busch Series at the Indianapolis Raceway Park, finishing 25th ST Motorsports.
- In 1999, he had two wins, finishing third in the standings. At fairgrounds, he finished second in two races.
- In 2000, he moved into a full-time schedule with Herzog Motorsports.
- In 2001, he recorded one win at the Chicagoland Speedway, finishing eighth in the point standings. This win would be his only one ever at the Chicagoland Speedway.
- He joined Hendrick Motorsports for a four-race schedule in the Winston Cup Series. It was his debut into the UAW-GM Quality 500 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
- Jimmie formally moved to Hendrick in 2002, driving the No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet.
NASCAR CUP SERIES
- During the 2002 season, Jimmie began racing full-time in the Winston Cup Series. Earning his first career pole position for the Daytona 500, becoming the third rookie to achieve this.
- Jimmie scored his first career win in the NAPA Auto Parts 500 at Auto Club Speedway. He became the first rookie to lead in points. In the end, he finished fifth in the points standings.
- In 2004, Jimmie had a total of eight wins, twenty top-five, and twenty-three top ten finishes.
- In 2005, he scored 13 top-fives, 22 top-ten finishes, and one pole position.
- In 2006, Jimmie won the Daytona 500, with Earl Barban as the spotter, who would win five championships with Jimmie in the No.48 team.
- Throughout this season, he was the only modern-era driver to win at least three races in each of his first five seasons. At the end of the season, he had one pole position, 13 top fives, 24 top tens, and his first championship title, and also won the driver of the year award.
- In 2007, Jimmie got a record of ten wins, four poles, 20 top fives, and 24 top-ten finishes, winning his second championship title, and was named driver of the year.
- In 2008, Jimmie became the second driver to win the championship three years in a row, winning, seven races, six poles, 15 top fives, and 22 top tens. He officially became the only driver to record three wins in each of his first seven seasons.
- In the 2009 season, Jimmie gets his fourth consecutive championship, becoming the only driver to win four back-to-back season titles. He had seven wins, four poles, 16 top fives, and 24 top-ten finishes.
- In 2010, Jimmie won his fifth consecutive championship. He scored two poles, 17 top fives, 23 top tens, and six victories, and was named Driver of the Year for the fourth time.
- 2011 was recorded as Jimmie’s worst performance to date, even though he finished sixth in the points rankings.
- In 2013, Jimmie won a record fourth All-Star race at the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. He closed out the season with six wins, three poles, 16 top fives, and 24 top tens.
- 2014 was the first time he didn’t make the top ten.
- In 2016, Jimmie claimed his seventh championship, even though he had to start at the rear of the pack.
- In 2017, Jimmie went into the year defending his title of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Champion.
- On November 20, 2019, Jimmie announced that the 2020 cup season would be his last full-time season of racing. Jimmie finished his final season with ten top-ten finishes.
