BIOGRAPHY
- Karim Mostafa Benzema was born in Lyon, France, on December 19, 1987. His parents are Hafid Benzema and Wahida Djebbara. Benzema is a Muslim in religion. He has three brothers and five sisters.
- At the age of 8, Benzema started to be interested in football and started his training at the local club Bron Terraillon SC. After playing some games for the club, Benzema attracted the club Lyon’s attention for his two excellent goals against the youth academy club in an ‘Under-10’ match.
BENZEMA’S CAREER: LYON
- In 1996, Benzema joined ‘Lyon.’ He became a part of the academy club, and soon, he was promoted to the youth categories. The ‘Championnat National des 16 ans,’ the French domestic league for footballers below 16 years of age, saw Benzema scoring 38 goals.
- Benzema was later promoted to the club’s reserve team and participated in the football league competition ‘Championnat de France Amateur’ before his 2004-2005 season of the Ligue 1.
- In January 2005, Benzema made his professional debut against FC Metz, where Lyon won the match 2-0. With these, Benzema signed a three-year professional contract for the team.
- During the same season, Lyon earned its fourth consecutive league title.
- In December 2005, Benzema made his UEFA Champions League debut. During the final group-stage match of Lyon against Rosenborg, a Norwegian club marked the first-ever professional goal by Benzema. Lyon won with a score of 2-1.
- In January 2006, Benzema scored his first professional double and defeated Grenoble with a score of 4-0 in the Coupe de France. In the same year, Benzema achieved the first professional league goal of his career against Ajaccio.
- During the 2007-2008 season, Benzema played as the lead striker, where he achieved 20 goals, which made him the top player in the league. It was the year that made him win the ‘Trophée du Meilleur Buteur’ award.
- Benzema scored a goal in the Coupe de la Ligue, scored four goals in the Champions League, and had six goals in six Coupe de France match that made Lyon earn its first double in the club’s history.
- In 2008, Benzema extended his contract with Lyon. During that season, the UNFP named him the ‘Ligue 1 Player of the Year’ and included Benzema in the ‘Team of the Year.’
BENZEMA’S CAREER: REAL MADRID
- On July 9, 2009, Benzema signed a six-year contract with Real Madrid, a Spanish professional football club. Benzema had his debut with the club during the opening pre-season friendly match against Shamrock Rovers, an Irish Club. During the match, he made his first goal for the club.
- In August 2009, an annual friendly tournament for the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy was made. Real Madrid defeated Rosenborg with a score of 4-0, and Benzema scored 2 out of the club’s goals.
- In the same year, Benzema made his league debut for Real Madrid against Deportivo La Coruna. He was also able to achieve his first league goal for the club against Xerez with a score of 5-0.
- Benzema scored a hat-trick for the club during the 2010-2011 season, which made Real Madrid won over Auxerre with a 4-0.
- In 2011 at the Mestalla Stadium, Benzema and his team scored a goal against Barcelona that made them get to the Copa del Rey finals.
- On December 10, 2011, it was a remarkable day for Benzema because he was able to score the fastest goal in an El Clasico match in just 21 seconds. He was named the French Player of the Year, which he also earned in 2012 and 2014.
- In 2014, Benzema won his second Copa del Rey still with Real Madrid against Barcelona.
- In the same year, Benzema signed a new five-year professional contract with Real Madrid, and he was also named the La Liga Player of the Month in October.
- In 2017, Benzema signed a contract extension that will retain his position as a club member until 2021.
- Benzema’s career with Real Madrid has been a great career for both him and the club. Benzema was part of the club that made them win La Liga’s championship during the 2011-2012 and the 2016-2017 seasons.
- He also won the Supercopa de España with the club in 2012 and 2017. He was also part of the club squad that won the UEFA Champions League in 2013-2014, 2015-2016, and the 2016-2017 seasons.
- Lastly, Benzema also won the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2014, 2016, and 2017.
BENZEMA’S INTERNATIONAL CAREER
- Benzema represented France at four different age levels: France U17, U18, U19, and U21 teams. Benzema was a member of the U17 France team that won the UEFA European U17 Football Championship in 2004.
- In 2007, Benzema made his senior debut for the France national team against Austria and scored his first senior goal in his debut game.
- He has also represented France in the 2008 and 2012-Euro Cups and the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
- Benzema has experienced several controversies and scandals. Along with Sidney Govou, Hatem Ben Arfa, and Franck Ribery, Benzema was charged with a minor prostitute’s solicitation in 2010.
- With these, Benzema was excluded from the France National team for the 2010 World Cup. However, in 2014, the charges were dropped against Ribery and Benzema because there was no sufficient evidence to prove that both of them knew that the prostitutes were underage.
- Another controversy arose in 2015. Benzema was arrested for his alleged blackmailing of a fellow French player Mathieu Valbuena. He was criticized by the top-level authorities that included the Prime Minister of France, Manuel Valls.
