EARLY LIFE
- Karl Benz or Karl Friedrich Michael Vaillant was born on 25 November 1844 in Mühlburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
- Benz’s father, Johann Georg Benz, was a locomotive driver. “Benz” was the name he acquired from the legal marriage of his parents after he was born.
- When Benz was two years old, his father died of pneumonia. He changed his name to Karl Friedrich Benz in honor of his father.
- Benz was raised in poor living conditions. Despite their limited means, Benz attended the Karlsruhe Grammar School and, later, Karlsruhe Polytechnic University.
- A quick learner, Benz was only 19 years old when he graduated from the University of Karlsruhe in mechanical engineering.
CAREER AND ACHIEVEMENTS
- At the age of 27, Benz joined August Ritter to launch a factory for sheet-metal working in Mannheim.
- During the first years, the business went downhill because of Ritter’s incompetence. Benz’s fiancée, Bertha Ringer, later bought all of the shares and saved his company from bankruptcy.
- When Bertha became the main shareholder, Benz began to lead in the development of new engines in the factory. He focused on creating a two-stroke engine with the hope of gaining revenue.
- His hard work and efforts finally brought him results. On New Year’s Eve of 1879, he received his first patent for his two-stroke engine. In 1880, he patented the other designed parts.
- Benz’s patent inventions became a huge success. In 1883, he established Benz & Company to produce motor engines.
- In his factory, referring to the Nikolaus Otto’s patent, he began designing a motor carriage with a four-stroke engine. He covered the engine with the body for a three-wheel vehicle, completed with electric ignition, differential gears, and water cooling.
- The vehicle was the first gas-fueled automobile, which could achieve a speed of eight miles per hour during the test drive. Benz named his creation “Benz Patent Motorwagen.” His innovation became the first automobile that was designed to generate its own power.
- In the late summer of 1888, he started selling his automobile to the public, making the car commercially available. Although his first model was difficult to control, the next year, Benz introduced Motorwagen Model 2, and Model 3 in 1889. His products were showcased at the Paris Expo.
THE RISING SUCCESS OF MOTORWAGEN
- Emilie Roger, a Parisian bicycle manufacturer, was the second customer who bought the Motorwagen. Roger then added the Benz automobiles to the line and sold the products in Paris.
- In August 1888, Bertha Benz used a Motorwageworld 3 to take her sons Eugen and Richard to visit her mother.
- During her trip, she repaired various technical and mechanical problems encountered in Model 3.
- She invented the brake lining system. The trip was her intention to demonstrate the Benz motorwagen’s performance for travel.
- The high demand for internal combustion engines made Benz open a massive factory in 1886. Benz & Company. It had grown from 50 employees in 1889 to 430 employees in 1899.
- Since then, the company had grown extensively to become the largest automobile manufacturer in the world.
- Benz continuously designed another automobile prototypes, such as a truck, motorbus, and a flat boxer engine.
DEATH AND LEGACY
- Benz retired from Benz & Company in 1903. From 1926, he served as a member of the supervisory board of Daimler-Benz AG until his death.
- Benz passed away in 1929, leaving his wife Bertha and five children.
- Karl and Bertha Benz had transformed the automotive industry forever. Without their contributions, our transportation mode may still be operated by Benz’s-power.
- Bertha Benz’s first long-distance drive journey with Model 2 was the original form of live marketing which made the automobile gained wide publicity.
- To commemorate her good deeds, in 2008, the German government opened a 194 km route named the ”Bertha Benz Memorial Route”. It follows the path of the first long-distance road trip powered with an internal combustion engine.
