HISTORY
- In the Hawaiian language, the name Honolulu means “sheltered harbor” or “calm port”.
- Before foreigners came to the island, Honolulu harbor was called Kulolia.
- Oral history and artefact evidence suggests that Polynesian migrants first occupied Honolulu.
- In 1809, after Kamehameha I conquered Oʻahu in the Battle of Nuʻuanu, he relocated his royal court to what is now downtown Honolulu.
- Captain William Brown was the first foreigner to arrive in Honolulu in 1784 as he was aboard the English ship Butterworth.
- Captain Brown named the harbor Fair Haven.
- Eventually, it was dubbed as Brown’s Harbor by other captains that arrived in the harbor.
- Afterwards, the name Honolulu was used, without any record stating the exact date.
- Honolulu turned into the most important harbor of Hawaii.
- Sandalwood and whales were big exports of Honolulu at that time.
- In 1850, Kamehameha III made Honolulu the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii.
- Honolulu was also the capital of the Territory of Hawaii and the Republic of Hawaii.
- It remained the capital when Hawaii became a U.S. state in 1959.

- Honolulu is located on the southeast shore of the island of Oahu.
- Oahu is part of the world’s largest mountain range.

- The majority of Honolulu’s population is Asian Americans: Japanese, Filipinos, Koreans, Chinese, and Vietnamese to name a few.
- The location of Honolulu makes it the perfect hub for business and trading between the Eastern and Western parts of the world.
- It is the only city in the U.S. with a royal palace.
- It is also saturated with Buddhist temples.

- Hawaii has a large tourism industry bringing in millions of visitors annually, and Honolulu acts as its main gateway.
- Another major contributor to Hawaii’s economy is its military research, development, and manufacturing.
- Major banks and airlines of Hawaii are headquartered in Honolulu, such as the Bank of Hawaii and Hawaiian Airlines.
- Major tourist attractions in Honolulu include the Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Waikiki Beach, USS Arizona Memorial, and International Market Place.
- Diamond Head is a volcanic cone on the island of Oʻahu which is also known as Lēʻahi because the line along the highest points of the mountain range resembles the shape of a tuna’s dorsal fin.
- The name Diamond Head was given by British sailors in the 19th century.
- Its English name was given in the 19th century by British sailors who thought the calcite crystals on the beach were diamonds.
- Hanauma Bay is a bay formed within a volcanic tuff ring and located along the southeast coast of Oahu. The word ‘hana’ in Hawaiian language means ‘bay.’
- USS Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor is a tribute and the resting place of the Marines and sailors killed on USS Arizona during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
- International Market Place is an open-air shopping hub that opened in 1956 in Waikiki.
CULTURE
- The Bishop Museum, which contains Hawaii’s biggest collection of Hawaiian and Pacific culture artefacts and natural history specimens, is the largest museum in Honolulu.
- The Honolulu Museum of Art houses the largest collection of Asian and Western art in Hawaii.
- Honolulu is the best place to appreciate botany as there are several gardens in the city such as the Foster Botanical Garden and Liliʻuokalani Botanical Garden.
- The Honolulu Symphony was founded in 1900 and is the second oldest US symphony orchestra west of the Rocky Mountains.
- Honolulu is full of venues where you can appreciate Hawaiian music, like The Hawaii Theater and the Neal Blaisdell Center Concert Hall.
- The main zoo in Hawaii is found in Honolulu which is aptly named The Honolulu Zoo.
- The Waikiki Aquarium is an aquarium in Honolulu which is also a working marine biology laboratory.
- Every year, Honolulu holds the Hawaiʻi International Film Festival (HIFF) featuring films produced across the Pacific.
- The HIFF is the largest film festival of its East-meets-West kind in the US.

- 44th U.S. President Barack Obama was born in Honolulu.
- 10th President of the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos died in Honolulu.
