HOW DOES KELP GROW?

THREE TYPES OF KELP

  • There are three main types of kelp: Macrocystis, Nereocystis, and Egregia. 
  • Macrocystis, also known as Giant Kelp, is the largest type of kelp and can grow up to 100 feet in length. It is found along the Pacific coast of North America and can form dense forests, providing habitat for a wide variety of marine animals. It is harvested in California for alginic acid, which is used as a thickening agent in some food products and as a foam stabilizer.

  • The Nereocystis luetkeana, also known as bull kelp, is an annual seaweed that grows from a spore and reaches maturity within a year. 
  • It is known as the “mermaid’s bladder”, which is a loose translation of the plant’s genus Nereocystis. This species of kelp thrives in rough coastal waters and high-energy wave environments.
  • Unlike giant kelp, it has a root-like holdfast with finger-like projections and flexible stems that can reach up to 60 feet. 
  • The bull kelp forms a single bulbous structure with narrow blades that create a golden-brown canopy on the surface of the water.
