American basketball player Wardell Stephen Curry II plays for the National Basketball Association’s Golden State Warriors (NBA). Curry, one of the all-time greats in basketball and the greatest shooter in NBA history, is credited with revolutionizing the game by encouraging teams and players to make more three-pointers. Early Life
- Stephen is Dell and Sonya Curry’s son. He was born in Akron, Ohio, while his father was a player for the Cleveland Cavaliers. His father spent most of his NBA career with the Charlotte Hornets while growing up in Charlotte, North Carolina.
- In order for Dell to play his final season of basketball with the Raptors, the family temporarily relocated to Toronto. At the time, Curry played for the Queensway Christian College boys’ basketball team, which he helped to guide to a winning season.
- Curry enrolled in Charlotte Christian School after the family moved back to Charlotte after Dell’s retirement, where he was recognized all-conference and all-state and captained his team to three conference championships and three appearances in the state playoffs.
- Curry aspired to play collegiate basketball for Virginia Tech because of his father’s illustrious career there, but due in part to his thin 160-pound stature, he was only given a walk-on place. After actively soliciting from Davidson College starting in the tenth grade, he ultimately decided to enrol there.
College Career
Freshman Season
- Curry finished with 15 points against Eastern Michigan in his collegiate debut, but he also made 13 turnovers. With 21.5 points per game, Curry finished the year as the Southern Conference’s top scorer. In terms of scoring among freshmen, he was second only to Kevin Durant of Texas.
- Curry beat Keydren Clark’s NCAA freshman season record for three-pointers on March 2, 2007, when he nailed his 113th three-point field goal of the year against Furman in the Southern Conference tournament semifinals.
- Curry was awarded SoCon Freshman of the Year, SoCon Tournament MVP, and a first-team All-SoCon selection at the end of his rookie season. Additionally, he was chosen for the SoCon All-Tournament team. He was chosen for the USA team to compete in the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championships after the season ended, where he averaged 9.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 19.4 minutes to help Team USA win the silver medal.
Sophomore Season
- Curry, who had reached his adult height of 6 ft 3 in (1.91 m), was in his sophomore season in 2007–08 and once again led the Southern Conference in scoring with an average of 25.5 points per game, in addition to 4.7 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.
- On March 21, 2008, Davidson paired up with seventh-seeded Gonzaga. Curry scored 40 points overall and made 8 of 10 three-point attempts to finish the game.
- Curry led Davidson to another victory on March 28, 2008, this time over third-seeded Wisconsin. With 33 points from Curry, Davidson won 73-56 to go to the Elite 8.
- Against the top-seeded Kansas Jayhawks on March 30, 2008, he made his 159th three-pointer of the year to break the previous mark.
- Curry scored 25.9 points, 2.9 assists, and 2.1 steals per game for the whole season. On March 31, 2008, he was selected to the Associated Press’ Second Team All-America. He was also chosen as the Midwest Region’s Most Outstanding Player of the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
Junior Season
- On January 3, 2009, with a 21-point performance against Samford, Curry scored more points than 2000 for his entire career.
- Curry rolled his ankle during the second half of a victory over Furman on February 14, 2009. Curry missed his first and only game of his college career on February 18 against The Citadel due to an injury.
- In the 2009 Southern Conference Tournament quarterfinals, Davidson defeated Appalachian State 84-68. Curry finished with 43 points, which is the third most in the history of the Southern Conference tournament.
- Curry scored 28.6 points, 5.6 assists, and 2.5 steals in his final season at Davidson. He was voted a unanimous first-team All-American and held the NCAA scoring record.
- In May 2022, he earned his sociology bachelor’s degree.
- Curry became the first Davidson player to have his number retired in a ceremony on August 31, 2022. He got his Davidson diploma in person at the ceremony, when he was also inducted into Davidson’s athletic hall of fame.
Professional Career
- The Golden State Warriors selected Curry with the seventh overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft on June 25, 2009. During the 2009–2010 season, he had an appearance in 80 games (77 starts), playing 36.2 minutes per game while averaging 17.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 1.90 steals.
- As the only rookie in the Western Conference to receive the honor three times, he was awarded Western Conference Rookie of the Month in January, March, and April.
- When he recorded his first career triple-double against the Los Angeles Clippers on February 10, he was just the sixth rookie in the history of the NBA to score a 35-point, 10-assist, 10-rebound performance.
- Curry had the most three-pointers made by a rookie in NBA history when he ended his rookie season with 166 three-pointers.
- He also became the first player of the Warriors to lead the NBA in free throw percentage since Mark Price in 1996–1997.
- In February 2011, Curry participated in the Skills Challenge as a member of the Sophomore team in Rookie Challenge, scoring 13 points, dishing out 8 assists, and pulling down 6 rebounds in 28 minutes.
- Curry extended his contract with the Warriors before the start of the 2012–13 season for four years and $44 million. At the time, many basketball writers thought Golden State was taking a risk due to Curry’s history of injuries.
- With 272 three-pointers in the 2012–2013 season, he broke Ray Allen’s previous record for the NBA’s single-season total (269 in 2005–2006).
- Curry was the first player in Warriors history to average 24 points and eight assists in a single season in 2013–14. Curry played in 78 games (all starts), scoring a career-high 24.0 points and 8.5 assists while also grabbing 4.3 rebounds and 1.63 steals.
- The Warriors ended the 2014–2015 season with 67 victories, and Curry was chosen as the NBA’s Most Valuable Player by earning 23.8 points, 7.7 assists, and two steals per game.
- Curry became the first player to accomplish this feat since Michael Jordan in 1989–90 after scoring 118 points in his team’s first three games of the 2015–16 season. This included a season-high 53 points against the New Orleans Pelicans in the third game.
- The Warriors made NBA history on November 24 when they defeated the Los Angeles Lakers to start the season 16-0. They then improved to 24-0 on December 11 with a victory over the Boston Celtics in double-overtime.
- In the history of the NBA, Curry became just the 11th player to achieve the award in back-to-back seasons after being named the league’s first-ever unanimous MVP. His 6.3-point improvement in scoring average is the biggest ever for a reigning MVP.
- Curry achieved his eighth triple-double in his career on October 19, 2021, in the Warriors’ season-opening victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, 121-114, as he finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists.
