EARLY LIFE
- James Rodríguez (pronounced Ha-mez) was born in Cúcuta, Colombia, on July 12, 1991, to Wilson James Rodríguez Bedoya and Maria Del Pilar Rubio.
- His parents split when he was young. James spent most of his childhood with his mother.
- He spent his childhood in the city of Ibagué. He grew up in a middle-class family that greatly loved football.
- His father was also a football player at the national level, though his career ended early due to injuries and alcoholism.
- As a child, he had a speech impediment that required visits to a speech therapist.
- During James’ childhood, certain areas in Colombia were heavily affected by drug cartels. Many of those involved in the football business were also involved in the drug ring.
- In 2006, at the age of 14, James began his professional career with the Colombian club Envigado. With his appearance, he became one of the youngest Colombians to ever debut professionally.
CLUB CAREER
- In 2008, James moved to Club Atlético Banfield, a club in Argentina. He made regular appearances for the team and garnered attention because of his skill and youth.
- In 2009, James and his team won the Argentine Championship.
- In 2010, James was signed by the Portuguese Club Porto. In his first season, his team finished as the Europa League Champions and the Taça de Portugal Champions.
- The following year, he won the LPFP Award for Breakthrough Player of the 2011–12 Primeira Liga season.
- In 2013, James moved to AS Monaco. He had a commendable debut with the team and proved to be crucial with his numerous assists and goals throughout the season.
- James gained more fame after a stellar performance at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He was then signed by Spanish team Real Madrid.
- During his first three years at Madrid, James and the team won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in 2014 and 2016, the UEFA Champions League in 2016 and 2017, and the La Liga Championship in 2017.
- James struggled to find playing time under Zinedine Zidane’s plan for Real Madrid.
- During the 2017-2018 season, James was loaned to the German Club Bayern Munich on a two-year long deal. They went on to win the Bundesliga title, with James being recognized as a crucial member. They defended this title in the following season.
- In 2019, James returned for what would be his last season with Real Madrid. Though only making a few appearances in the season, James helped Madrid win the 2019–20 La Liga.
- In September 2020, James joined the English Club Everton. He was reunited with Carlo Ancelotti, who was formerly his Team Manager back in Madrid.
INTERNATIONAL CAREER
- James is a skilled midfielder and winger. He is known for his ability to create plays and make crucial assists. He is also praised for his ambidexterity and dribbling skills.
- James began his international career when he debuted in Colombia’s Under 17 squad. He would later advance to his country’s Under 20 squad.
- In 2011, James was called-up by Colombia’s senior team. Later on, he helped the team qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
- Wearing the number 10 jersey, James became known as one of the best players at the World Cup. His stunning goal against Uruguay was declared as the best goal in the tournament. He later won the FIFA Puskás Award for the best goal of the year.
- Colombia was knocked out of the tournament during the quarter-final against Brazil. Despite this, James’s stellar performance was recognized. He won the Golden Boot as the World Cup’s top goalscorer.
- In 2016, James helped Colombia finish third place in the Copa América Centenario.
- Colombia was eliminated during the Round of 16 at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, with James’ run affected by injuries.
OUTSIDE FOOTBALL
- James is said to have loved the anime character Tsubasa Ozora as a child.
- In 2011, James married Daniela Ospina, a volleyball player. She is the sister of James’ teammate David Ospina, who also plays for Colombia.
- James’ daughter Salome was born on May 29, 2013.
- He has a tattoo of his daughters’ name on his arm, which he often kisses in celebration after scoring a goal. He has many other tattoos on his arms and back.
- In 2014, James launched an energy drink called “ 10 Gold” in his
- home country. The sales aim to raise money for foundations supporting underprivileged children in Colombia.
- In 2017, James and Daniela filed for a divorce.
- In October 2019, James welcomed a son named Samuel with his girlfriend Shannon de Lima.
- James is one of the most followed football players on Instagram.
