Key Facts & Information

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

  • At the end of this module, students will be able to divide unit fractions by whole numbers and vice versa. Students will also be able to apply these in solving word problems.

A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER:

  • When dividing using fractions, take note of the following:
    • Start by converting the division sign into a multiplication sign
    • After doing this, always get the reciprocal of the second factor before solving
    • In solving word problems, try to visualize the scenarios

THEORY:

  • Dividing fractions is no different than dividing whole numbers by whole numbers since we are essentially still asking the same question: “How many ____ are there in ____?” However, in dividing using fractions, we are going to be applying skills used in multiplying fractions.
  • The main technique we are going to use in dividing fractions is the KEEP, CHANGE, FLIP method, which states that given A ÷ B, we KEEP A, then we CHANGE the division sign into a multiplication sign, and then we FLIP B to turn it into 1/B. When we flip B, we are essentially getting what we call its “reciprocal” in the form of 1/B.
  • Take, for example, 3 ÷ 1/2. Recall that with this expression, we are asking ourselves, “How many 1/2 are there in 3?”. By following the
