BIOGRAPHY
- Gabriel Fernando de Jesus was born on April 3, 1997, in Bairro do Limão, São Paulo, Brazil. He was a son to Diniz de Jesus and Vera Lucia Jesus. He grew up in the neighborhood of Jardim Peri.
- At the age of five, Gabriel made street football his calling. He was playing Brazilian Samba across the streets, and he was used to playing central midfield rather than attacking.
- Later on, Gabriel joined the amateur clubs in the region. This includes Pequeninos do Meio Ambiente, União do Peri, Cantareira, Vitória do Peri and Associação Atlética Anhanguera.
PALMEIRAS
- On July 1, 2013, Gabriel signed a youth contract with Palmeiras. He later became the club’s top goal scorer, having 54 goals in 48 matches. In January 2014, after several negotiations, he decided to sign a three-year contract with the club, with an additional two more years and a salary increase from R$15,000 to four times as much in his fifth year.
- The fee to buy Gabriel out from his contract increased to R$30 million. However, this deal changed the balance of his economic rights from 75–25% in favor of Palmeiras to 70–30% in favor of his agents.
- During the 2014 edition of the state under-17 championship, Gabriel scored 37 goals in 22 games for the Palmeiras, resulting in several offers from clubs throughout the country and abroad.
- Gabriel was also first included in Palmeiras’ squad for the senior match held on August 27, 2014. However, Gabriel did not make any senior appearances during the campaign as his side was severely threatened with relegation.
- The supporters criticized this decision that was made by managers Ricardo Gareca and Dorival Junior. Later on, Gabriel’s supporters demanded a change for the youngster through a petition.
2015 CAREER
- On March 7, 2015, Gabriel made his senior debut in Campeonato Paulista, replacing Leandro Pereira during the 73rd-minute mark of the game. They won the game with a score of 1–0 against the CA Bragantino at Allianz Parque. Gabriel made a total of eight appearances, all on the bench.
- Gabriel started his career on April 29 in the second round of the second leg of the year’s cup, with a score of 1–1 at Sampaio Corrêa Futebol Clube. Gabriel’s first appearance in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A happened on May 9, 2015, against Atletico Mineiro with a home draw of 2–2.
- Gabriel had several magnificent games that made him a remarkable player. He finished the season with four goals from 20 games and helped his team win the cup. He was also selected as the Best Newcomer in the league.
2016 CAREER
- Gabriel and his team participated in the Campeonato Paulista, and he scored his first goal in the cup on February 4, 2016. It was an opening game against the Esporte Clube Sao Bento with a draw of 2–2.
- After twelve days, Gabriel scored his first-ever goal in continental football, with a 2–2 draw against Uruguay’s River Plate in the year’s Copa Libertadores. On April 6, he scored twice in a 3–3 draw but was sent off after fighting against Damian Musto.
- Later on, Gabriel apologized for this misconduct.
- On May 14, during the opening game of the national season against Atletico Paranaense Club, Gabriel scored twice during the second half, winning the game with a 4–0 win. He accumulated 12 goals as his team won their first national championship in 1994. Gabriel was also named the Bola De Ouro player of the season.
MANCHESTER CITY
- Gabriel decided to sign for the Premier League Club Manchester City in January 2017. His contract will last up until the summer of 2021, and the City will pay a reported fee of £27 million/€33 million, with add-ons.
- During his first season with Manchester City, Gabriel accumulated 11 total appearances with seven goals. His appearances were reduced because of an injury.
- During the 2017–18 season of the Premier League Goal, Gabriel scored his first goal on August 26 of that year, which helped his team win against AFC Bournemouth, and scored two more goals against Liverpool on September 9 resulting in a win for his team.
- In August 2018, Gabriel decided to sign a contract extension up until 2023 to play for the Manchester City team. In January 2019, Gabriel showed an extraordinary performance after scoring four goals for the first time in his career in a single game against Burton Albion that made his team win with a score of 9–0.
- In August 2020, Gabriel assisted and scored both victory goals against Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League. They played at the Etihad Stadium with closed doors because of the coronavirus outbreak.
INTERNATIONAL CAREER
- During the 2015 World Cup in New Zealand, Gabriel was part of the Brazil National team under-20 that finished as runners-up. Gabriel scored his first goal of the tournament against Nigeria with a win of 4–2 in New Plymouth.
- In 2016, Gabriel was selected in Dunga’s provisional 40-man squad for the Copa America Centenario in the United States and became a replacement for Douglas Costa, who was injured. However, he still missed it because of the lack of a U.S. visa.
- In the same year, Gabriel was one of the five forwards named in the squad for the team’s hosting of the Olympic Tournament. He scored against Denmark with a score of 4–0 and against Honduras in the semifinal with a 6–0 victory.
- During the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification game against Ecuador, Gabriel debuted in the senior team and scored twice in the last three minutes, making Brazil won with a score of 3–0.
