Key Facts & Information
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to describe objects in the environment using names of shapes and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.
A NOTE FOR THE TEACHER
- When teaching students how to identify shapes in the environment, try the following in your lesson:
- Ensure your students fully understand the concepts of individual shapes. E.g., a square has four sides of the same length. A triangle has three sides, etc.
- It’s really fun to get kids thinking about how shapes make up the world around us. So, if you can’t get out and about, use images online or in books.
THEORY
- Up until now, students have learned the names of basic shapes like flat, 2D objects. Now, it’s time for them to start associating these shapes with objects in the real world. They should be able to identify that the moon is the shape of a circle, for example. They must also be able to situate a shape in the environment. For example, the clock is in the shape of a circle. It is above the door, which is a rectangle.
- Look at how this basic diagram of a train can be translated into a real train!
- Use a pencil or crayon to draw the shapes you can see in the picture above.
