Key Facts & Information
Learning Objective
At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.
A Note for the Teacher
When telling time, take note of the following:
- Know that analog clocks are clocks that have the numbers 1 – 12 around them. They have a shorter hand to tell the hour and a longer hand to tell the minutes.
- Know that digital clocks are clocks that tell the time in the written form already.
- Remind students to tell time to the nearest five minutes involves multiples of five.
Theory
Time is another measurement that can be derived by using a measuring device such as a clock.
There are two types of clocks: analog and digital:
- An analog clock tells time through its shorthand and longhand. The shorthand denotes the hour, while the longhand denotes the minutes. It is a circular shape wherein the 12th hour is placed on the north of the clock. The 1st hour is seen after the 12th hour, and the rest of the hours are placed equally clockwise until it reaches the number 12 on top.
- A digital clock tells time through the exact digits. It is a written form of time already wherein a colon is in between the hour and the minutes passed.
To tell time to the nearest five minutes, this deals with multiples of five.
One full hour is made up of 60 minutes. Therefore, we could add multiples of five minutes up to 60 or subtract multiples of five minutes from 60.
Some common terms in telling time to the nearest five minutes are:
- quarter past the hour (n:15 am or pm, wherein n is the current hour)
- A quarter before the hour or quarter to the hour (n:45 am or pm, wherein n is the following hour)
- half past the hour (n:30 am or pm, wherein n is the current hour)
Basically, if the word used is passed, it means that you are dealing with the addition of the multiple of five minutes to the current hour.
If the word used is before, it means that you are telling time that would happen n minutes before the following hour, wherein n could be any multiple of five minutes.
