Key Facts & Information
- Safety is a concept that encompasses all preventive measures required to ensure people’s lives, health, and physical safety.
- Furthermore, safety can also refer to the management of identified dangers in order to obtain the optimum level of risk.
- For any establishment, large or small, safety is a socially constructed concept that adheres to situational definitions of what is expected and allowable.
TYPES OF SAFETY
- There is a difference between resources to meet requirements that are safe and those that appear to be safe. The terms used by the community to describe various types of safety are as follows:
- Normative safety is achieved when a commodity, regardless of its overall safety history, meets appropriate design, construction, or manufacturing standards.
- Substantive or is also known as objective safety occurs when the actuality of safety history is preferred, regardless of whether or not the standards are met.
- Perceived or subjective safety refers to an individual’s level of comfort and likelihood of danger without regard for regulations or safety background. For example, traffic signals.
- Security, also known as social safety or public safety, discusses the risk of danger caused by purposeful unlawful conduct such as assault, burglary, or vandalism. Moreover, public safety is more important to individuals than substantive security because of the moral issues involved.
MEASURES AND LIMITATIONS OF SAFETY
- Safety measures are deliberate actions and strategies implemented to improve the overall safety of a given task, process, or organization.
- Thus, it is also defined as a collection of actions and precautionary measures implemented to achieve safety, β in other words to minimize hazards to public health.
- Instructional videos or manuals for products, exit signs, fire windows, smoke alarms, sprinkler systems, and fire hydrants for establishments are examples of safety measures.
- Proactive safety measures refer to staying ahead of the game and resolving any issues before they become incidents or accidents. Inspections, interviews, audits, safety sampling, and monitoring of performance and behavior are included in this type of safety measure.
- Reactive safety measures deal with problems, accidents, and incidents as they occur or have already occurred. Incident reviews, accident reporting and investigation, ill health and sickness reviews, and so on are all part of this.
- However, there are certain factors that affect safety measures which include: government policies, poor safety measures, lack of financial strength, poor inspection, equipment or materials, and even communication.
SAFETY RULES FOR ADULTS
- It is always advised for adults to have their locks on even if one lives in a safe neighborhood. Doing this not only reduces the number of burglaries but also ensures the safety of your family.Β
- It is critical to keep medicines properly stored in your home cabinets because they must be handled with care. No one should ignore the safety guidelines for storing medications at home. The medicine is not only dangerous and should be kept out of the reach of children, but it should also be kept out of the reach of some adults.
- Keeping the floors dry at all times helps to reduce potential hazards. Accidents caused by a wet floor can have serious health consequences, such as spinal injuries. Everyone should be taught at home the significance of being responsible in order to maintain safety.
- Accidents happen as a result of unanticipated events. However, it is critical to be prepared in case of an emergency. It is imperative to have a concrete emergency plan in place to ensure the safety of the family in the event of a disaster.
- Despite the fact that internet technology has provided many benefits to people all over the world, it may also cause harm. To avoid becoming a victim of countless incidents of hacking and phishing, do not give out personal information to random strangers on the internet.
SAFETY RULES FOR CHILDREN
- Children are the most vulnerable to road accidents, and adults must teach them not to go near the road unsupervised and to look both ways when crossing the street.
- A child should be taught about the dangers of eating foods given to them by strangers. Moreover, an adult must teach a child that accepting food from anyone is dangerous, and that no matter how tempting the treat is, they must refuse it.
- A child must understand that playing with fire is strictly forbidden and that they should only be near fire when supervised by an adult. Make sure that all fire extinguishers are safely out of reach of children.
- A child should understand that it is dangerous to share personal information with strangers, such as phone numbers, addresses, email addresses, or photographs. Any information shared should only be done with the permission and presence of an adult.
- In addition to the above, children must learn to avoid dangerous objects such as knives, matches, and other potentially hazardous items. Besides keeping these items out of their reach, they should never come into contact with dangerous objects to avoid potential hazards.
