Key Facts & Information
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
- Until now, no one knows where the Aryans came from. Historians, on the other hand, hold the Rig Veda, which was said to be recorded by the Aryans themselves and serves as the sole source of India’s earliest history, to be telling the real story of the Aryans.
- A group of people descended onto the Indus Valley, which lies between the tributaries of the Indus River, around 3000 BC. They came with their families in the hopes of finding a new place to live.
- The Aryan’s society and system were sufficiently formed and the land they discovered near the Indus River was fantastic for them, so they chose to settle here.
- Saptasindhu was later given as a name by them (the land of seven rivers).
- They were tall, fair-skinned, prominent-nosed, self-assured people who called themselves Aryans.
- The Aryans rapidly spread, inhabiting area after another of this land, burning and clearing dense forests to make way for habitable land, instituting cities and dynasties along its sparkling rivers while chanting their sacred hymns.
- Before the Aryans arrived, the land had inhabitants who were willing to take up arms for their land. These natives were referred to as “Dasa” by the Aryas.
THE DASA
- The Aryans encountered stiff opposition from the natives who already lived in the land they wanted to live in and forced back on every inch of land the Aryans set foot on.
- The conflict between invaders and natives (Dasa) resulted in generations of bloody battles and competitive advantage for power of this territory.
- The Aryans described the original inhabitants of India in the Rig Veda as having dark skin (Krishna-tvach), a snub nose (Ansa), unsweet-sounding grunt-like speech, and worshipping strangely shaped symbols.
- The Aryans described the Dasas as having an unsophisticated language, crude manners and habits, and an unrefined religion. The invaders even claimed that the natives didn’t look human.
- Despite the Aryans’ indignant propaganda meant to dehumanize them, the Dasas were not so barbaric and unworthy after all. They were highly – skilled architects. They had constructed a number of defensive towns.
- The Dasas were wealthy, and some of their kings’ names were demonized in the Rig Veda.
- The Dasas were also skilled warriors, as they would not have been able to successfully resist and undermine the Arya.
PERIODS OF DOMINANCE
- As the Aryans claimed their territory, their dominance was known to had been divided into two parts, the Vedic Period and the Epic Period.
- THE VEDIC PERIOD
- During this time, Hinduism emerged as a new religion.
- The followers of Hinduism were known as Hindus.
- They prayed to Brahma, the creator, Vishnu, the protector, and Shiva, the destroyer.
- During this period, society was divided into four castes: Brahmanas (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (traders), and Sudras (labourers).
- The Vedas, written in Sanskrit, are the world’s oldest books. These are the Anaadi, means without a beginning in time.
- The term “Veda” is derived from the Sanskrit word for “root.” “Vid” means “to be aware.” Veda is a Sanskrit word that means “knowledge.”They are eternal revelations passed down orally through generations.
- THE EPIC PERIOD (Late Vedic Period)
- During the Epic Period or the Late Vedic Period, the Aryan epics Ramayana and Mahabharata were written.
- The Ramayana is the most ancient and well-known epic. It is made up of seven books written by Valmiki.
- The theme is a conflict between Rama, an Aryan representative, and Ravana, a non-Aryan representative.
- Veda Vyasa wrote the epic Mahabharata in poetic form, with one lakh verses.
- It is a story about rivalry, vengeance, love, compassion, friendship, and other emotions between two powerful clans, the Pandavas and the Kauravas.
