  • At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range of 10-90.

  • When teaching Multiplication by Multiples of 10, take note of the following:
    • Ensure that the student understands place value
    • Make sure that the student is well-versed in their multiplication tables

THEORY

  • When we multiply by multiples of 10, we can break down the equation to make it simpler and easier to understand.
  • Let’s take, for example, the equation below:
    • 4 x 50 =
  • We can turn 50 into 5 x 10.
    • 4 x 5 x 10 =
  • Now we see that the equation is much easier to understand. Solving it would be 4 x 5, which is equal to 20. Then we multiply 20 by 10, giving us an answer of 200.
    • 4 x 5 x 10 = 200
    • 20 x 10 = 200
