Key Facts & Information
STEP 1 – TEACH COUNTING WITH NUMBER RHYMES
- Using rhymes and songs is a fun and interactive way of teaching numbers to kindergarteners. Number songs and rhymes such as “10 Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed”, “This Old Man – He Played One”, “The Ants are Marching One by One, Hurrah”, introduce children to the sounds of numbers.
- Most kindergarteners adopt what they learn when they are using their sense of touch. Show the numbers on your fingers as you sing together with your kid so they know that a particular number relates to that many fingers.
STEP 2 – INTRODUCE THE NUMBERS THEMSELVES
- Start by writing the numbers from one to ten on the board or on a sheet of paper. While pointing to each number as you count in order, say each one out loud and let your child repeat after you. This technique links the counting skill with a visual image of each number.
STEP 3 – DISCUSS EACH INDIVIDUAL NUMBER
- Starting with 0, spend some time teaching each number. Write both the number and the word, and draw or illustrate its meaning.
- Proceed to 1, show one cube, one finger, or one of any object. Then move to the number 2.
- Make sure not to move to the next number until your child fully understands. Learn one number at a time.
STEP 4 – INCORPORATE IMAGES
- Children are visual learners. For each number, write the number itself and draw a representation of it. For example, if you are teaching number 4, draw four apples, four bees, or four flowers.
- For best results, let your child draw the visual themselves.
STEP 5 – EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF SEQUENCE
- A number line is a math tool that helps students count, add, and subtract numbers.
