Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson, students will be able to understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones.

A Note for the Teacher

When teaching place value, try the following in your lesson:

• The learner must understand Zero (0) within a place value. Example, 403 is not the same as 43.
• Understand how to read numbers. Example, two thousand, seventy-nine is NOT two thousand and seventy and nine. 
• Make the learner reads out the numbers in words in its place value instead of saying it as digits.

Theory

Every digit in a number has a place value. Place value refers to the value of the digit based on its position.

Examples

Place Value is the quantity represented by the position of a digit.
Example: The number 468
The 4 is in the hundreds place and its place value is 400
The 6 is in the tens place and its place value is 60
The 8 is in the ones place and its place value is 8

A Digit is a symbol used to show a number: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Expanded notation is writing a number and showing the place value of each digit. Example 468 in expanded notation is: 400 + 60 + 8

Word form is writing a number using words. 468 in word form is: Four hundred sixty-eight.
