- At the end of the lesson, students will be able to interpret simple expressions into numerical expressions and vice versa.

- When interpreting expressions, take note of the following:
- Break down the phrases and expressions into segments
- Recall the key terms that relate to a specific operation
- Double check if the translations and interpretations being made make sense
THEORY:
- Knowing how to interpret numbers into words, and words into numbers is an important skill in problem-solving, most especially in elementary algebra. Having the ability to comprehend and breakdown complex word problems into simpler numerical expressions is an important technique, as it also has real life applications.
- Take for example the numerical expression: (5 + 4) x 6
- We can translate and interpret this as:
- Six multiplied to the sum of five and four
- Now let’s try doing it the other way around.
- Take, for example, the expression: Ten multiplied by five, added to 3 squared
- We can translate and interpret this as:
- 3² + (10 x 5)
- Expressions like these can be as short as phrases or sentences but can also be as long as full-on paragraphs, so it’s important to know the keywords associated with each operation. The following are some examples:
- Addition – add, sum, increase, plus, more than
- Subtraction – subtract, minus, reduce, fewer than, difference
- Multiplication – multiply, product, times, twice, thrice
- Division – divide, quotient, half, a third
- Exponents – squared, cubed, to the nth power
