PERSONAL LIFE
- Andrew Lloyd Webber grew up in a musical family. William, his father, was the director of the London College of Music. His mother, Jean, was a piano teacher, and his younger brother, Julian, was a known concert cellist.
- At the age of three, Andrew Lloyd Webber first played the piano and violin before starting to pick up the French horn.
- Holding a violin, he appeared in Nursery World Magazine at age five.
- Shortly after, he began creating his own music at age six.
- Andrew Lloyd Webber’s childhood fantasy was to become the chief inspector of England’s ancient monuments.
- With this dream in mind, he studied at Westminster School as a Queen’s Scholar and pursued a course in history at Magdalen College, Oxford.
- However, in the winter of 1965, he dropped out to pursue his interest in musical theater and to study at the Royal College of Music.
- Andrew Lloyd Webber has married three times. From 1971 to 1983, he was married to his first wife, Sarah Hugill, whom he had two children with, named Imogen and Nicholas.
- In 1984, he married his second wife, Sarah Brightman, who was part of the cast of Cats in 1981.
- In 1991, he married his lifetime partner, Madeleine Gurdon, an equestrian sportswoman, with whom he had three children, named Alastair, William, and Isabella.
MUSICAL CAREER
- In 1965, Andrew Lloyd Webber received a letter from a 21-year-old law student, Tim Rice, who was looking for a composer. It was only a matter of time before Webber and Rice began their long-time musical collaboration.
- Consequently, they started working on their first musical, The Likes of Us, which failed to be played on stage at the time.
- Their next effort was the musical work entitled Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, a retelling of the biblical story of Joseph that started as a 20-minute pop-cantata piece. This play reached the stage on March 1, 1968, and became an overwhelming success.
- Following this, the two began working on another biblical-themed musical, Jesus Christ Superstar, in 1971. This production combined pop music with classical operatic style.
- The succeeding projects of the pair included producing music albums, which were then turned into plays.
- In 1976, they created the concept album, Evita. The song βDon’t Cry for Me, Argentinaβ eventually became a hit. It reached the London stage in 1978 and turned into a Broadway show the following year.
- The two also produced a psychedelic British band together. It was named Tales of Justine.
- However, by the 1980s, the Rice-Webber partnership had come to an end, which propelled the solo career of Andrew Lloyd Webber as a composer and theatrical producer.
- In 1981, he produced his first solo musical, Cats, based on the poetry of T. S. Elliot. Running for 21 years, it became the longest-running musical in the history of London. On Broadway, it lasted for about 18 years.
- Cats was then followed by Starlight Express. Although not as popular as his first production, it still became known and staged in different venues.
- Based on the French novel, Le Fantome de I’Opera, by Gaston Leroux, Webber crafted his biggest piece to date, The Phantom of the Opera, which debuted in London in 1986.
- The Phantom is known to be the longest-running Broadway show in history. It celebrated its 10,000th performance on Broadway on February 11, 2012.
- During the 1990s, various Andrew Lloyd Webber productions were released, including The Sunset Boulevard (1994), a film adaptation of Cats (1998), and Whistle Down the Wind (1998).
- During the 21st century, Andrew Lloyd Webber produced works such as The Beautiful Game (2000), Bombay Dreams (2002), The Woman in White (2004), The Sound of Music (2006), Love Never Dies (a 2010 sequel to The Phantom), and the musical theater version of The Wizard of Oz (2011).
- His other notable works include Aspects of Love, You Must Love Me, and School of Rock.
- He also earned a huge number of on-screen credits due to the adaptations of his works. His music has appeared in a total of 210 films and TV shows.
AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
- With such illustrious credits to his various compositions and musical productions, Andrew Lloyd Webber has received numerous awards.
- His recognitions include the prestigious EGOT: two International Emmys, three Grammys (including Best Contemporary Classical Composition for Requiem), an Oscar, and seven Tonys.
- He has also garnered seven Oliviers, a Golden Globe, one BRIT, 14 Ivor Novellos, the Praemium Imperiale, and the Richard Rodgers Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre.
- In 1992, Webber was awarded a knighthood. He was then made a life peer in the New Year Honours List in 1997, making him a Baron, and he was also named a Kennedy Center honoree in 2006.
- In 2006, he was ranked as the 87th Wealthiest Man in Britain by The Sunday Times. With his net worth estimated at Β£800 million, he was second in The Sunday Times Rich List in 2017 for UK musicians, next to Sir Paul McCartney.
- Furthermore, he owned successful productions in London’s West End, including The Adelphi Theatre, Cambridge Theatre, London Palladium, New London Theatre, Her Majesty’s Theatre, Theatre Royal Drury Lane, and The Other Palace in London.
