BIOGRAPHY
- Gillian Schieber Flynn was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on February 24th, 1971. She grew up in the Coleman Highlands neighborhood with her parents, who were both professors at the Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley.
- Flynn’s mother, Judith Ann, was a reading comprehension professor, while her father, Edwin Matthew, worked as a film professor. Her brother, Travis, worked as a railroad mechanic.
- Through Flynn’s childhood, she spent most of her time reading books and watching movies. Flynn has memories of having A Wrinkle in Time pried from her hands at the dinner table and seeing Alien, Psycho, and Bonnie and Clyde at the age of seven.

EARLY CAREER
- Flynn originally wanted to become a crime reporter. However, later on, she chose to devote and focus her time on writing novels and stories because she believed that she did not have the skills for police reporting.
- After her graduation, Flynn worked at U.S. News & World Report as a freelancer before being hired as a feature writer at Entertainment Weekly. A year later, she became a television critic and wrote reviews for films. However, she was fired in December 2008.
FLYNN’S WORKS: SHARP OBJECTS
- In 2006, Flynn was able to publish her first novel, Sharp Objects. The novel is about a reporter named Camille Preaker who briefly stayed at a psych hospital. Preaker faces a disturbing assignment to return to her small hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls.
- Later on, Preaker identified with the young victims strongly. Shadowed by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to understand the story and survive her homecoming.
- Sharp Objects became an Edgar Award finalist and the winner of two of Britain’s Dagger Awards. Sharp Objects was the first book ever to win multiple Daggers within a span of one year. It is also currently adapted as an HBO limited series starring Amy Adams.
FLYNN’S WORKS: DARK PLACES
- In 2009, Flynn published her second novel, Dark Places. It is about Libby Day, a seven-year-old girl who witnessed the murder of her mother and two sisters in “The Satan Sacrifice” of Kinnakee, Kansas.
- Libby survived and testified that her brother, Ben, was the killer. After 25 years, the Kill Club, a secret society obsessed with notorious crimes, located Libby and asked her for the details of the day of the murder, hoping to find answers to free Ben.
- However, Libby hoped to profit from her tragic history. Later on, she finds herself right back where she started – on the run from a killer.
- Dark Places was a 2009 New York Times bestseller, a New York Review of Books Favorite, a Publishers Weekly Best Book, a Weekend TODAY Top Summer Read, and a Chicago Tribune Favorite Fiction choice.
- In 2015, Dark Places was adapted into a film starring Charlize Theron.
FLYNN’S WORKS: GONE GIRL
- Flynn’s third novel, Gone Girl, became an international sensation and a runaway hit. The story depicts the story of Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. While they were preparing, Nick’s beautiful and clever wife goes missing from their rented mansion on the Mississippi River.
- Nick was placed under mounting pressure from the police and the media, as wells as Amy’s parents. Nick was described as the town’s golden boy who shows an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior.
- Nick is ambiguous and bitter, but is he really the killer of his wife Amy?
- Gone Girl is a thriller, mystery, and crime novel. The novel spent more than a hundred weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. It was also named one of the best books of the year by People Magazine and Janet Maslin at the New York Times.
- Gone Girl was nominated for both the Anthony Award and the Edgar Award for Best Novel. Flynn also wrote the screenplay for the adaptation of Gone Girl for the big screen, which starred Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike.
LATEST RELEASE OF FLYNN
- Flynn’s latest release is The Grownup. It is an Edgar Award-winning short story and classic ghost story.
- Flynn’s works have been published in 41 languages. Currently, she lives in Chicago with Brett Nolan, her husband, and their children. There is a theory that she has been working on her next novel.
