EARLY LIFE
- Luis Alberto Suárez was born on January 24, 1987 in Salto, a city in Uruguay. His parents are Sandra Diaz and Rodolfo Suárez. His parents separated when he was young.
- Suárez is mixed race as his grandfather is of African descent.
- His family suffered from poverty. They moved to Montevideo when Luis was seven.
- Luis learned football on the streets of Montevideo. He later joined the youth team of Urreta FC.
- Luis had an accident as a child involving a vehicle that ran over his foot, breaking his fifth metatarsal bone. Despite this injury, he recovered and continued to play football.
- As a teenager, he worked as a street sweeper to help his family.
- He has an older brother named Paolo who is a retired professional footballer.
- At 14, Luis joined the youth team of Club Nacional de Football.
- As a teenager, he struggled with alcohol use. His youth team coach encouraged him to overcome this and pursue football.
CLUB CAREER
- He made his professional debut in 2005 for Nacional. He was soon scouted by the Dutch club Groningen.
- Suárez moved to the Netherlands and worked hard to learn Dutch quickly.
- Despite a good performance, Luis had problems with aggression on the field.
- His performance in the 2006–07 season of the Eredivisie caught the attention of AFC Ajax. Groningen initially rejected the club’s offer for Luis but relented after Ajax increased their bid.
- Luis performed well in his first season with AFC Ajax as they finished second in the league.
- In the 2008–09 season, Suárez continued having disciplinary issues.
- In spite of this, he contributed much to the team.
- In 2010, Ajax won the KNVB Cup. Luis was later declared Dutch Footballer of the Year.
- In November 2010, Suárez bit Otman Bakkal on the shoulder. His club suspended him for two matches along with a fine. He was later suspended for 7 matches by the Dutch Football Association for his transgression.
- In January 2011, it was announced that Suárez would be transferring to the English club Liverpool. Ajax gave Suárez a medal for his contributions to their eventual Eredivisie win.
- Liverpool won the 2011–12 Football League Cup.
- In October 2011, Luis was accused of insulting Senegalese-French player Patrice Evra. Suárez was charged with racial abuse despite denying the accusations. He was given an eight-match suspension and fine.
- In December, Suárez was given a one-match ban for making an obscene gesture towards Fulham fans.
- Suárez was included in the 2012-13 PFA Team of the Year. He was also one of the top scorers in the Premier League.
- In April 2013, Suárez bit the Serbian player Branislav Ivanović. He was later banned for ten matches.
- Despite stating in May 2013 that he wanted to leave Liverpool, Luis was not allowed to do so.
- In 2014, he was declared PFA Player of the Year and Premier League Player of the Season. He also shared the European Golden Boot with Cristiano Ronaldo.
- In August 2014, Suárez debuted for FC Barcelona.
- During Suárez’s first season with Barcelona, they won the UEFA Champions League, La Liga, and Copa Del Rey.
- The following season, Barcelona won the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup. They also retained the La Liga title.
- Barcelona won the 2016 Copa del Rey, though Luis sustained an injury in the final. They also won the 2016 Supercopa de España.
- Despite Suárez’s absence in the final due to a ban, Barcelona won the 2017 Copa del Rey. In the following year, they won this title once more.
- Barcelona won the 2017–18 La Liga. They retained their title the following season.
- In August 2020, it was publicized that FC Barcelona was not keen on keeping Luis.
- In September, Suárez announced his transfer to Atlético Madrid.
INTERNATIONAL CAREER
- Suárez made his senior debut for Uruguay in February 2007.
- He participated in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, though Uruguay would finish fourth.
- Suárez helped his team win the 2011 Copa América Championship.
- Luis was also chosen to play in the 2012 Summer Olympics and 2013 Confederations Cup.
- At the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Suárez received criticism for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder. Luis was subsequently banned for nine international matches along with a four-month ban from any football-related activity.
- Suárez participated in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL
- Besides his native tongue, Suárez is able to speak Dutch and English.
- In his teens, Luis dated Sofía Balbi, whom he would later marry in 2009.
- In 2010, Suárez’s first child and daughter Delfina was born. He also has two sons named Benjamin (born 2013) and Lauti (born 2018).
- He is an ambassador for the sportswear brand Puma.
