BIOGRAPHY
- Ryan Steven Lochte was born in Rochester, New York, United States, on August 3, 1984. He is the son of Ileana and Steven Lochte. When he turned five years old, his family moved to Gainesville to train him in swimming.
- Both of his parents became his coach. Initially, Lochte was not very interested in swimming. In high school, he placed second at the Junior Olympics and this made him more dedicated and focused on swimming. From that point, he played the up-and-coming underdog.
- Ryan Lochte attended the University of Florida, where he won seven NCAA swimming titles. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Lochte attracted massive international attention after winning gold as a member of the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay team.
- Lochte also won a silver medal behind Phelps in a 200-meter individual medley.
- At the short-course world championships at the 2006 Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA), Lochte set two world records in the 100-meter and 200-meter backstroke 200-meter IM.
- Afterward, Lochte set his first long-course or 50-meter world record in the 200-meter backstroke at the FINA world championships in 2007.
2008, 2009, AND 2010 SWIMMING CAREER
- At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, Lochte won a gold medal in the 200-meter backstroke and set a new world record of 1 minute and 53.94 seconds. He also won gold with the 4×200-meter freestyle relay team.
- In the 200- and 400-metre IM, Lochte won bronze medals. For the following two years, Lochte continued to give excellent and impressive performances.
- At the 2009 FINA world champions, Lochte broke Phelps’s world record in the 200-meter IM, and he also won the 400-meter IM. He won six gold medals against Phelps’s five during the 2010 Pan Pacific championships.
- Later on, Lochte won an extraordinary seven medals at the FINA short-course worlds. He won all his five individual races and sparking the Americans to a come-from-behind victory in the 4×100-meter medley relay. Lochte also won a silver medal as a part of the 4×200-meter freestyle relay team.
2011-2016 SWIMMING CAREER
- At the FINA world championships in 2011, Lochte brought home five gold medals. He defeated Phelps twice, in the 200-meter freestyle and the 200-meter IM.
- In the latter event, Lochte set another first world record, breaking his record wearing a high-tech suit with the new global standard of 1 minute and 54 seconds, since FINA banned high-performance non-textile swimsuits in January 2010.
- After this, Lochte continued his outstanding performances and showed exceptional versatility when he achieved several wins, including the 200-meter backstroke and the 400-meter IM. He also helped the American team to win gold in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay.
- At the 2012 London Olympics, Lochte entered as one of the favorites. He began the competition with a dominating win in the 400-meter IM. However, Lochte struggled in other events.
- He won silver in the 200-meter IM, behind Phelps, and won bronze in the 200-meter backstroke. Lochte and his team won gold in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay and a silver medal in the 4×100-meter freestyle.
- At the 2013 FINA world championships, Lochte won three gold medals and one silver medal. In 2014, Lochte struggled to win competitions and missed the podium in his other individual events. With this, Lochte was not recognized at the 2014 Golden Goggles.
- However, Lochte made a strong comeback after winning two bronze medals, a silver, and a gold at Qatar’s Short Course World Championships. In the 2015 World Champions in Kazan, Lochte became a solid favorite in events after Phelps was banned from competing.
- At the 2016 Rio De Janeiro Olympic Games, Lochte won his sixth career Olympic gold as a 4×200-meter freestyle relay team member. Lochte was also featured on the cover of the swimsuit issue of SwimSwam Magazine.
- Lochte also qualified in his individual fourth Olympic Games and finished second in the 200-meter medley behind Phelps.
TROUBLE IN RIO AND CONTROVERSIES
- Despite his exceptional performance, Lochte’s achievements were overshadowed by his experiences outside the pool. He hit international headlines when he claimed that in the morning of August 14, on their way back home, he and three other American swimmers had been robbed at gunpoint by people who were pretending to be Rio police officers.
- After stating conflicting accounts and surveillance footage was found, Lochte admitted that he had fabricated his version of the morning’s events. In fact, an inebriate Lochte gave money to armed security guards after damaging a gas station bathroom.
- Lochte was suspended for ten months by the United States Olympic Committee and USA Swimming.
- Lochte’s troubles continued in May 2018, when he posted a photo of him receiving an IV infusion on social media. The US Anti-Doping Agency immediately opened an investigation regarding the infusion.
- It was later determined that the infusion was an allowed substance but required a therapeutic use exemption, which Lochte failed to obtain.
- He was suspended for 14 months that started in July 2018.
