Early and Personal Life
- Wayne Mark Rooney, known as Wayne Rooney, was born on October 24, 1985, in Croxteth, England.
- His parents are Thomas Wayne Rooney and Jeanette Marie. He has two younger brothers who along with him are of Irish descent.
- The primary school that Rooney attended was Our Lady and St. Swithin’s in his hometown. He later on went to school at The De La Salle Academy.
- Ever since he was a child, he supported his local football club Everton and eventually signed a contract with them in 2002.
- Rooney is currently married to his high school sweetheart, Coleen. Together they have four sons, Kai Wayne, Klay Anthony, Kit Joseph, and Cass Mac. Kai Wayne, being the eldest, was born in 2009. Klay Anthony was born in 2013 while Kit Joseph was born in 2016. Their youngest son, Cass Mac Rooney, was born in 2018.
Football
- Football is a sport in which two teams of 11 players, using any part of their bodies except their hands and arms, try to maneuver the ball into the opposing team’s goal.
- Only the goalkeeper is allowed to handle the ball and may do so only within the penalty area surrounding the goal. The team that scores more goals wins.
- Modern football originated in Britain in the 19th century. Since before medieval times, “folk football” games had been played in towns and villages according to local customs and with a minimum of rules.
Everton Football Club
- Everton FC became one of the top football clubs of their era. They were among the twelve founding members of the Football League, the first professional football competition in the world.
- There have been different versions of the Everton logo throughout the years. In some, the “EFC” letters have dominated, while in others the drawing of Prince Rupert’s Tower (located in Everton Brow) can be seen. In the year 1938, a motto in Latin was added to most versions of the logo: “Nil satis nise optimum” which means in English “Nothing but the best is good enough.”
Manchester United Football Club
- Manchester United “The Red Devils” is one of the most prestigious football clubs. They maintain a distinguished tradition, a record of consistent success, and a great history.
- For the team logo, the upper part of the inner shield of the Manchester United crest shows a ship that originates from the Manchester City Council coat of arms (a ship can also be seen on Manchester City’s logo). Under the ship, there is a larger drawing that shows a devil – the devil was first added to the crest in the year 1970.
Career
- Rooney made his professional football debut with his local football club Everton when he was only 16 years old. This made him the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history and only in his first season (although his record has since been surpassed).
- He played with Everton for two years and then transferred and began to play for Manchester United in 2004. He immediately became one of the most famous football stars in the United Kingdom.
Awards and Achievements
- In 2002, Rooney won The BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year for being “touted by many as the most promising English football talent to have surfaced in years.”
- In the years 2004-2005 and 2005-2006, he was deemed the PFA Young Player of the Year. This is an award that is presented annually by the Professional Footballers Association to the best player aged 23 or younger.
- In the years 2008, 2009, 2014, and 2015, Rooney was awarded the England Player of the Year Award. This is an award given by The Football Association to outstanding and impressive players of the England national team.
- Rooney has been commended for his brilliant hat-trick during his debut and it is considered one of the best performances in his career. In this match against Fenerbahce in the Champions League in 2004, he scored three goals that helped his team grab a 6-2 victory.
- In the year 2006, Rooney played in the Champions League final against Wigan Athletic. He was able to score both the opening goal of the match and the final goal of the match that guided his team, Manchester United to a 4-0 win. Rooney was named as the “Man of the Match” for his outstanding performance.
- In 2009, Manchester United played against Tottenham in the Premier League. Come halftime, his team was behind 2-0. During the second half, Rooney contributed to bouncing back with his team as he scored two goals and also assisted in two goals. The match ended with a win for Manchester United with a final score of 5-2.
- In 2010, Manchester United and Manchester City were against each other in the semi-final of the Carling Cup. They were tied at 3-3 in stoppage time. Rooney scored a winning goal that brought the score to 4-3 and granted his team a spot in the final.
