Key Facts & Information
DESCRIPTION
- Jerba, also spelled Jarbah or Djerba, is an island situated in the Gulf of Gabes on the Mediterranean Sea. It is located off the Tunisian mainland, to which it is connected by a causeway almost 4 miles (6 km) long.
- The island of Djerba is 198 square miles (514 sq km), and is shaped like a molar tooth. The island’s rise is low—scarcely 188 feet (54 m) above ocean level at its most noteworthy point—and is encompassed by shallow sea shores of fine sand and palm trees, particularly in the upper east.
- The island was referred to antiquated geographers as the “place that is known for the lotus eaters” and was initially settled by the Romans.
HISTORY
- Djerba’s main city is called Houmt-Souk and its population is around 70,000 people. The island is also known to be the home of the most ancient synagogue El Ghriba that is 26 centuries old.
- Most of the populace are Muslims who are considered highly ethical towards other religions.
- The island was vanquished by the Arabs in 655 CE. Over the next hundreds of years, it went under the control of the Berbers, Sicilians, and the Spanish. They all sought to establish control over the prolific grounds of Djerba.
- It was in 1881 that the French overpowered a significant part of the island as part of a deal with the British. Under French decision, local people have been genuinely ensured by their adversaries.
- All through the 1950s, Djerba being part of Tunisia, celebrated the independence of the Tunisian Republic after it won its freedom from the French.
- The island is famous among tourists with its town Ajim that was used in 1977 as the setting for Mos Eisley, the home of Anakin Skywalker from Star Wars.
- An interesting fact is that the island’s construction of high buildings is prohibited. As far as architecture goes, most of the hotels are built in the traditional style of local homes – square white buildings with domed roofs.
- This type of construction emphasizes how much the people in Djerba are respectful towards traditions.
